Star Wars fans may have another reason to look forward to the release of the new video game Star Wars: Battlefront later this year. It has been all but confirmed that a tie-in novel, titled Battlefront will be released later this year. Word got out about the novel because the Amazon preview for the paper back of John Jackson Miller's Star Wars: A New Dawn includes a look a the new timeline of canon novels. The timeline includes and entry for Battlefront in between Episodes IV and V (well between Heir to the Jedi and Episode V to be more specific). See the timeline for yourself below,
First off, I'm glad their bringing back the timelines at the start of the books (though I wish they'd include the comics in there as well, but that may be too much of an ask). Secondly, I think its interesting that they're doing a tie-in novel of a video game. I doubt the novel will be an adaptation since we expect the game to cover more eras than just between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It sounds a bit like they're trying to capitalize off the popularity of the game. I doubt there will be any significant cross over between the game and the book.
As for when this will be release, we don't know for sure yet. Random House publishing does have one more date in 2015 set aside for a Star Wars novel (November 3rd) and considering we expect the game will be released around that time, it would make sense for this to be the release date for the novel. No word yet on the writer, but it seems likely that an announcement will be made before the paper back of A New Dawn hist shelves on March 31st (though I could also see them waiting to officially announce the book at Celebration Anaheim next month).
