Sooner or later (preferably much, much later) we're going to have an episodic Star Wars film scored by someone other than the legendary composer John Williams. We'll get an idea as to what that will be like this December when the first Anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters with music by Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat. However, it's looking more and more like Williams is getting set to return to the Galaxy far, far away for 2017's Star Wars Episode VIII. Williams was recently interviewed by Variety and, of course, the topic of Episode VIII came up.
Williams told Variety,
“If I can do it, I certainly will. I told Kathy Kennedy I’m happy to do it, but the real reason is, I didn’t want anybody else writing music for Daisy Ridley.”
Before beginning work on Episode VIII, Williams has a few other projects lined up. He'll be writing the music for Steven Spielberg's next movie, Ready Player One, and scoring an animated version of Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball poem.
