New 'Star Wars Rebels' Clip Introduces Tom Baker's Bendu

By: Benjamin Hart

We are now just days away from the premiere of season three of Star Wars Rebels. One of the first episodes of this new season will introduce an intriguing new character that is voiced by a legendary actor.

Bendu, who we first saw in the epic season three trailer explaining to Kanan that he is "the one in the middle" between the Light and Dark sides of the Force, will make his first appearance in the upcoming season premiere. What makes this hulking character extra special is the fact that he's being voiced by Tom Baker, who has been best know as playing the Fourth Doctor in the long running British television series Doctor Who.

Today, a new clip was released from the season premiere episode "Steps Into Shadow" which an extended conversation between Kanan and Bendu. Watch it here:

In addition, USA Today spoke with Tom Baker about his new role. The 82 year old actor had some interesting insight into Bendu and how he breathed life into the character. You can check out a few excerpts from the interview below:

Q: What does the Bendu add to the Star Wars saga?

A: The Bendu is described as a “life force,” which is something we haven’t really seen before in Star Wars. He’s not the dark side or the light — he’s something greater. I’m quite flattered that (Rebels executive producer) Dave Filoni fancied me as a "life force" at the age of 82.

Q: The Bendu helps Kanan get his groove back. Do you see him as a Yoda-like mentor figure?

A: The big characters in these series appear to be making decisions, but it depends on the writers giving you good powerful scenes. These adventures of The Doctor and Bendu are followed and loved by people who dream. Dreaming is so important, because anything can happen. It has nothing to do with physics or logic, it’s like religious faith.

Q: Did they tell you anything about the character that most helped your portrayal?

A: No one except Dave would tell me anything because it was so secret. I didn’t know much about Doctor Who when I got that role either. When I set out to do a part, I don’t know what it’s going to do to me. You hope and try to absorb everything around you and let it drift through you.

Baker actually isn't the first "Doctor" to make the jump to a Galaxy far, far away. David Tennant, who portrayed the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, voiced droid professor Huyang in season five of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Season three of Star Wars Rebels premieres Saturday, September 24th at 8:30pm on Disney XD!
