Although Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is right around the corner, it's hard not to look ahead and get excited about Star Wars: Episode VIII, which isn't due out in theaters in theaters until December 2017. Among the cast members returning from The Force Awakens is Adam Driver, who plays the villainous Kylo Ren. Driver recently made some intriguing comments about the film and compared it to The Empire Strikes Back in regards to it's tonal shift. He previously stated:
"It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear."
Now Adam Driver is back, and this time he wants to walk back some of his previous comments. In an interview with Variety while discussing his latest film, Paterson, the subject of Star Wars came up, and he used opportunity to clarify what he said last month:
“No, no, and that’s not even what I said. What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn’t say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]—I was using it as an example, so poor example. Next time I should say—I’m trying to think of another sequel to a movie that’s good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways.”
Of course when you mention Empire a lot of people are going to infer different things that may or may not reflect his original meaning. It seems pretty obvious that what he's trying to say is that Episode VIII has a tone that sets it apart from The Force Awakens, just as The Empire Strikes Back's tone is different from A New Hope's. That seems logical, especially considering what we've heard about the film so far, as well as it's director, Rian Johnson.
Star Wars: Episode VIII opens in theaters on December 15th, 2017!
