Filoni Talks Star Wars Experience and Inspiring a New Generation

By: Lillian Skye

In the foreword of the Star Wars Rebels Visual Guide by Adam Bray, Dave Fioni talks about his experience working with George Lucas, the future of Star Wars, and his hope that the show will  inspire a new generation of fans:

The first time I ever saw Star Wars: A New Hope, I was amazed at the images I saw on screen. I had never seen anything like it before, and it left a great impression on me. I started studying the look of the Star Wars universe, and the first way I did that was to read The Empire Strikes Back Sketchbook and the The Return of the Jedi Sketchbook by Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero.

Years later, I continued that exploration and education when I began working on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars telling stories right alongside George Lucas. It was a fascinating experience to learn how George saw the world he created, what he thought made it work, and what didn't. Everything had a purpose--every color, every shape, was relating something to the audience. Working on The Clone Wars was like receiving a Master's Education in Star Wars, and when the show ended it was time to move foreword and begin a new star wars project in the post George Lucas Era.

Star Wars Rebels is the first major release in an exciting new era of storytelling at Lucasfilm. To maintain the look and feel of Star Wars, we have brought along many of the experienced artists and production staff who worked and learned their craft directly from George Lucas. It's the responsibility of the team to keep the spirit of Star Wars alive, to move it forward for a new generation of fans around the world.

This visual guide to Star Wars Rebels reminds me of the books I used to read when I was first learning about the Star Wars universe. It is my hope that the images, descriptions, and details within these pages inspire a new generation of fans to dream of visiting this beloved galaxy an imagine their own characters, their own stories, and what might be, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

The Force be with you, always,

Dave Filoni
Executive Producer

Clone Wars Mystery Character In 'Lords Of The Sith' Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

A few months back author Paul S. Kemp confirmed that a character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be making an appearance in his upcoming novel Lords Of The Sith. The book is set for release on April 15th, 2015 and, unlike previous novels, will be a part of the new official canon. Now the Star Wars books 2014 sampler has been released, and along with it the mystery character in question has been revealed....

Spoilers below!

It's Cham Syndulla!

There has been much speculation about the future of Cham's character as of late, especially after it was revealed that Hera from Star Wars Rebels would share his last name, Syndulla. Lords Of The Sith is set after Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith and before Rebels, so given Cham's involvement it could tie into the television much more than we previously thought.

You can pre-order the full novel here. Or if you would like to read the excerpt featuring Cham, you can download it for free here and on the Apple Ibooks store.

Rumor: Daisy Ridley's Episode VII Character Name Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Our friends at Making Star Wars has found some interesting information on the Jedi Council Forums, where a user named Darth Simon claims to have received information from the Episode VII Puzzlewood set. He provides two images of names, presumably printed on paper, just below the previously reported AVCO title. Simon states:

"This is what could be the Daisy character name. And another kind of creature involved. A BIG BIG BIG part of the problem is that there is a massive secrecy campaign on set. A BIG part of that is disinformation with false names false info on documents. Could this be false. Hell, yes! But it is the information that my source managed to see at Puzzlewood. He/she was slightly surprised at being able to get close to this info. I haven't been able confirm whether this is the genuine thing or just part of JJ's disinformation strategy."

Possible Spoilers below!

Kira does sound like a Star Wars-esque name, and one that might fit Daisy Ridley's character(Kira Solo maybe?), and Rocker could possibly be a creature name. Simon states more than once that these could very well be fake names to hide the true ones, or incorrect altogether. So you should definitely take this info with big a grain of salt.

Rinzler: Boba Fett Survived The Sarlaac, According To George Lucas

$

By: Benjamin Hart

Boba Fett lives!!

Now, I know what you're think; we knew this already, right? And you would be correct, but only partially

Yes, the Expanded Universe long ago established that Boba Fett had indeed survived being eaten by the Sarlaac in Return Of The Jedi. But now that all previous books & comics have been deemed to be part of the Legends universe, and thus non-canon, it was believed that Boba Fett's original fate may be definitive. But now it seems that may not yet be the case.

Author Jonathan Rinzler, the man behind the awesome making of series of books, participated in a Reddit AMA(ask me anything) today and had some very interesting things to say about the masked Bounty Hunter. Reddit user blackbetha asked:

"Jonathan, In your mind, does Boba Fett Escape the Sarlacc Pit?"

In which he responded:

"Yes, he does. I have been in meetings with George where he confirms that Fett survived. If it comes from George then it’s true!"

So there you have it, even the Maker himself believed Boba Fett lived on. But now the big question is; does this mean we'll see more of Boba Fett after Return Of The Jedi? Obviously, George Lucas is now retired and the Lucasfilm story group has basically replaced him as the keeper of continuity for the Star Wars Saga going forward. Will the story group build on George's ideas and give Boba a cameo in the Sequel Trilogy? Anything is possible, I suppose, but let's not jump to conclusions just yet. With George Lucas out of the picture now, at least for the most part, Boba Fett may continue to be a Sarlaac snack  for a while. But with the rumored Boba Fett stand-alone film presumably coming soon, you never know what surprises may be in store for us.

BREAKING: Jason Isaacs to Voice the Inquisitor

By: Lillian Skye

The voice behind the Pau'an villain from the upcoming series Star Wars Rebels has finally been revealed. Now, the galaxy far, far away has a visitor from the Wizard world: Jason Isaacs. Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, will play the role of the Inquisitor--a Jedi hunter and the primary villain of the show.

"I’ve played a few unpleasant characters,” says Isaac, who is no stranger to voicing villainous characters. He was he voice behind the ruthless Admiral Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the deceptive Ra's Al Ghul in the Batman animated film Under the Red Hood, and the hero-turned-villain Sinestro in in an animated Green Lantern film. "Possibly, you could call them villains — depends on your point view.”

The Inquisitor is familiar with Jedi ways and training tactics--information that would be helpful when tasked to track down and kill the surviving Jedi and force-users. "He evokes classic villains that we've seen from Darth Maul through Darth Vader, but he isn't just a carbon copy of them."

"When the Inquisitor shows up, it means something is significant," says Lucasfilm Story Group's Pablo Hildago "and it's a definite challenge to our heroes."

Rumor: Christina Chong Cast In Episode VII

By: Benjamin Hart

Latino Review has returned with a new Star Wars Episode VII casting rumor! They are now claiming that Christina Chong, who has appeared in many different Television series including the recent 24: Live Another Day series, has been cast in Episode VII. Variety also followed up with their own report agreeing that Chong has been cast. No further details about who she could be playing were revealed.

With two separate sources reporting this, it does add more validity to this rumor. But nevertheless, nothing is official until Lucasfilm says so. Take this with a grain of salt.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Battle For "Biggest Star Wars Fan" Title in 'Force for Change' Promo

The two funniest men in television have gotten on board with the Star Wars: Force for Change Initiative.  The Daily Show's Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report's Stephen Colbert appeared in a hilarious promo for the Force for Change, in which they battled over who was the biggest Star Wars fan and, as a result, who would be in Star Wars Episode VII (the current grand prize in the Force for Change).

Check out the video below,
It's great to see some A-list celebrities getting involved with Force for Change.  It probably didn't take much convincing to get Colbert and Stewart to appear in the video as both are huge Star Wars fans.  Colbert once got George Lucas to create a special Revenge of the Sith parody (starring him, of course), and Stewart hosted The Main Event, an hour long interview with Lucas, at Celebration V in 2010.

Rumor: 'History Of The Sith' Project In The Works

$

By: Benjamin Hart

Latino Review is back with another rumor, but this time it isn't about Star Wars Episode VII. They are reporting that a new project is in the works that will focus on the history of the Sith and will draw inspiration from some Legends titles:

"I’ve heard that Disney’s Team Star Wars has spun up development on a project involving the history of the Sith that pulls from elements found previously in Knights of the Old Republic and the Golden Age of the Sith parts of the “Tales of the Jedi” comics series.

This project seems pretty new, or at least in the first stages of revival, so it’s unclear what form this will take: spin-off movie? TV special? Netflix something? Animated whoosit?"

Now that previous books, comics & games that explored this era have been deemed to be Legends, now may be a good time have a canonical retelling of the Sith's history prior to The Phantom Menace. Darth Bane(above), creator of the infamous Rule of two, appeared in the final episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars(voiced by Mark Hamill). That could be a jumping off point for future storytellers to explore the Sith backstory. And bringing in elements from the very popular Knights Of The Old Republic video games would definitely be a fan pleasing move.

As Latino Review points outs, this could be anything. With multiple stand-alone films and television productions currently in progress, the possibilities are endless. But as always, take this rumor with a grain of salt and wait for official word from Lucasfilm.

Opinion: This Is Not the Outrage You're Looking For

$
0
0

By: David Gremillion

The Death Star has been destroyed, Han Solo proves his loyalty, Luke Skywalker yells out "CARRIE!" on accident, and they all go off with great big smiles on their faces.

Yep, times are good for the Rebel Alliance.

When you work hard, you play hard. So our valiant victors celebrate the win in a big way with pomp, glamour, and of course a medal ceremony. Luke gets his medal with a big grin on his face, Han Solo gets his with a wink toward Princess Leia...

                ...and that's it.
Chewbacca lets out a roar and stands there, sans medal.
                Let the controversy commence!

For thirty-seven years (feel old yet?) fans have wondered why George Lucas chose to overlook the "walking carpet" during the medal ceremony. Was it racism? After all, the humans got their medals. Was it just an oversight? Perhaps it was just due to a lack of time?

Nope, it was perfectly consistent and is exactly what should have happened.

First, let's ignore the fact that Carrie Fisher would need a ladder to get a medal on Chewie and take a deeper look at the lore. Wookiees do not take pride in material awards like medals, ribbons, or trophies. It isn't in their nature to put things on a mantle or around their necks and say "look how awesome I am!"

In the "official" words of Lucas (which could change on a whim), Chewbacca was actually given a medal at Han's insistence. In a smaller, more private, gathering, Leia draped a medal around his neck...although I don't think Han arranged a kiss to go with it.

But, did he deserve the medal?

Sure, Chewie is lovable and one of the most popular characters in all of cinema. However, in this writer's opinion, he didn't do enough to warrant the award. Perhaps he convinced Han to return, perhaps he was the co-pilot during the mission, but here's the key point to consider.

Wasn't Wedge more deserving? The man who flew with Luke, had his back, fought since the beginning of the battle, and only flew out of the trench on Luke's orders?

Wasn't R2-D2 more deserving? The droid who was nearly destroyed during the battle? Who worked on Luke's X-Wing during the fight? Who carried the plans within his rusty innards that allowed them to plan the attack to begin with? Even Padme thanked the little droid during the Phantom Menace for a job well done.

Wasn't Garven Dreis more deserving? The man who volunteered to draw the tower guns' fire on the first pass? Who led Red Squadron during the attack? Who was the only person, other than Luke, to launch his torpedoes? Whose leadership and strategy contributed directly to the victory?

I love Chewie, always have, always will. But when you look at the actual battle itself, was Chewie deserving of the Geek Smack Talk that has haunted social media for the past thirty-seven years or should we all be asking ourselves...

                Where is Artoo's medal?!?

David hosts a weekly talk show called "Get Your Geek On" and can be heard live every Monday night at 8pm CST at www.channel1138.com.

Rumor: Potential Episode VII Plot Details

$
0
0
By: Dominic Jones

Has some of the mystery surrounding the plot of Episode VII been lifted?  Devin Faraci over at BadAss Digest is reporting to have some interesting details of some early scenes from the movie.  Keep in mind that this is just a rumor and could very well turn out not be true.  Regardless, this is your official SPOILER ALERT!  If you don't want to risk knowing anything about the movie stop reading now.

According to Badass Digest,

Imagine the standard Star Wars crawl, and when it ends the camera pans up to the stars. But instead of a spaceship zooming into frame we see… a hand! A severed hand, tumbling through space. A severed hand gripping a light saber.

That hand falls onto a desert planet, where it is discovered by characters who will be our heroes. One is Daisy Ridley. The other is John Boyega, who is playing someone trying to change his path in life (again, I’m keeping it vague here). They recognize the light saber as a Jedi relic and decide to return it to the proper people.

Their quest takes them off world, and they meet up with Han Solo and Chewbacca, who aren’t flying around in the Millenium Falcon anymore but are piloting… well, that could be a spoiler. I’ll leave it. Anyway, Han and Chewie recognize the light saber as Luke’s, and they say they haven’t seen their friend in thirty years, since the events of Return of the Jedi.

So begins a quest to find the missing Jedi Master. Meanwhile, on an ice planet, nefarious forces are building a super weapon, one capable of destroying not planets but entire solar systems…

So that sounds....interesting.  There are some interesting elements.  I like the concept of Luke's lightsaber serving as a mcguffin to get the story going, especially if it is going to be 'The Search for Luke Skywalker'.  Also, Han and Chewie not flying the Falcon is a twist (not necessarily a bad one) and perhaps part of the plot will revolve around them getting the Falcon back (or returning to it after an extended period of not using it).

However, there are certain elements of this rumor that sound awful.  For starters, panning up to the hand after the crawl.  A pan up is no big deal (Attack of the Clones did it), but a hand?  In space?  The idea of a hand surviving both space and re-entering the atmosphere is a bit ridiculous, even for a franchise that features noise and fire in space.  Also, why is Luke's hand floating in space?  Is it the hand he lost in Empire?  If so, how did it survive so long?  If not, how did he lose his other hand?  Then there's this issue, a super weapon capable of destroying an entire system?  Really?  We've already had two Star Wars films (three if you want to count the droid control ship in Episode I) that feature super weapons.  That just seems way over the top and shows a lack of creativity (and, for the record, I had no problem with there being a second Death Star).

Overall, I have to say I hope these rumors aren't true.  That being said, if they do turn out to be true I hope they come across a lot better as moving pictures on the silver screen than they do as words on a computer screen.  Keep in mind that we shouldn't truly judge something until we actually see it play out on screen.  Something that sounds lame when written down may look incredible on the big screen.  A perfect example of this?  Star Wars.  Imagine you're George Lucas trying to pitch that movie in world without Star Wars.  It probably wouldn't have sounded that great either, but without it you would not be reading this right now.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm of Disney.

Message from J.J., Episode VII X-wing Revealed

By: Lillian Skye

J.J. Abrams is back with another video update on Force for Change and speaks to fans from London from what appears to be the set of Episode VII. In the video, Abrams encourages fans to support Force for Change, noting that there is still one week left to donate and that the campaign has supporters from 119 countries. The money raised from Force for Change will benefit UNICEF, and each donation counts as an entry. Every person who donates will be entered in a drawing for a chance to film a scene in Episode VII. In the final week of the campaign, fans also have the chance to win a private advanced screening of the movie in their home town.

What's special about the video, however, is what's unfolding around Abrams. As J.J. addresses the fans, the camera is slowly zooming out, revealing a large vessel behind the director. As the video progresses, the entire ship is revealed and a pilot walks across the sand and towards the vehicle. Abrams steps out of the pilot's way as he ascends the ladder and climbs into the ship.

Star Wars fans took to Twitter, questioning the authenticity of the vehicle and prompting a response form the official Star Wars twitter account, which confirmed that the ship is "an Episode VII X-wing."

"Thanks for your support. Hope to see you on set this summer," Abrams says as a mouse droid zooms past his feet. See the entire video from Abrams below, and support Force for Change for the opportunity to win a trip to the Episode VII set to film a scene in the movie.

According to our friends at Jedi News, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew have returned home to the United States while Harrison Ford recuperates from his leg injury. Production on Star Wars Episode VII is expected to go on a hiatus in August, they will probably return to London once filming resumes.

Jedi News also mentions that this is the reason Peter Mayhew did not appear at the recent London Film and Comic Con. Carrie Fisher, however, did attend.

And speaking of Harrison Ford, The Daily Mail recently spotted him out and about once again. This time with his family boarding his private plane. We wish Harrison the best on his continued recovery!

First off, Faraci reports that Gwendoline Christie is playing an imperial officer and Boyega is playing a stormtrooper who has deserted the empire.  Apparently, Christie was Boyega's commanding officer and is after him for deserting.  He also reports that the sand planet in Episode VII is not Tatooine (sorry, but I don't buy that part for a second).

What's also interesting is that, Faraci reports, that Christie's role was originally to be played by a man in the draft of the film written by Michael Arndt, but was gender swapped was Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams took over script writing duties.  This also happened late in the game, because Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, #CumberWatch) was in talks to play this part before the decision was made to make the role a female.

While I'm sad that Cumberbatch (a favourite of ours here at The SWU) won't be in the film, I do think it was a very cool and progressive move by Abrams and co. to gender swap the role.  Between Daisey Ridley, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Crystal Clarke, and Carrie Fisher, Episode VII already has more significant female roles than any prior Star Wars film.  I feel this is a great thing, as it is more reflective of Star Wars fandom.  Besides, between Episodes VIII and IX as well as all the spin off films, Cumberbatch has many more chances to be in a Star Wars film in the coming decades.    #Cumberwatch lives on!  (If you don't know what #Cumberwatch is, you need to start listening to the SWU Podcast!)

As for Boyega playing a deserter stromtrooper and Christie playing an officer, I think that's a cool concept for a sub plot.  It creates a lot of potential for drama between heroes over whether or not to trust this guy.  Plus it gives him a very interesting back story that could be explored in other media....

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
