Marvel made some exciting announcements today prior to their 'Cup o' Joe' panel regarding the new Star Wars comics coming in 2015.  Marvel will begin publishing Star Wars comics for the first time since 1985 in January 2015 after re-acquiring the license, which was held by Dark Horse comics from 1992-2014.

The first three series, set to launch in early 2015, will be titled Star Wars, Darth Vader, and Princess Leia!  Star Wars will be an ongoing series written byJason Aaron and illustrated by John Cassaday and is set following the battle of Yavin.  It will star the main cast of the Original Trilogy.  Star Wars: Darth Vader is an ongoing series written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Salvador Larroca.  It will deal with vader following the destruction of the Death Star as he tries to regain The EMperor's trust and instill fear and terror in the galaxy.  Star Wars: Princess Leia will be a five issue mini series written by Mark Waid with art by Terry Dodson and will cover large portions of Leia life as she rises from Princess to Imperial Senator, to Rebel leader, and will show how she deals with the destruction of Alderaan.

Newsarama revealed the covers (prior to the panel) for the first issue of each series, check them out below!

Star Wars Rebels Premiere First Impressions

Pictured: The Rogue Rebels enjoy the show.

Thursday night, just a few blocks away from San Diego Comic Con at Reading Cinemas, Gaslamp 15, Lucasfilm premiered the first episode(s) of Star Wars Rebels. The screening lasted approximately 45 minutes and attendees walked out with very positive reactions their first taste of the series. Several journalists from different from sites across the web, including our very own Chris Seekell, were there to experience it and they subsequently shared their thoughts online. Here are some excerpts from their (spoiler free) first impressions:

"This show is essentially what 'The Clone Wars' would be if it were set in the Original Trilogy era with Original Trilogy dialog, character driven stories, pacing, and music. I predict that 'Star Wars Rebels' will be a massive hit, will be critically acclaimed and will be popular with Star Wars fans of all ages. This series captures the magic of A New Hope perhaps better than any Star Wars project since 2005... and maybe even since 1983. It will premiere with a TV film this fall. Do not miss it. Even if the only thing about Star Wars you liked was the first film, do not miss it." - Chris Seekell, The SWU

"Rebels has laughs and plenty of action, and the hour long episode doesn’t waste a moment of dialogue. I was pleasantly surprised by the pacing and how much we learned without it feeling forced. The time period in between Episodes III and IV is a fascinating era to see more of, and honestly, it’s touching to watch this ragtag group of heroes do what they can to fight back against the Empire." - Amy Ratcliffe, IGN (Amy also discussed her thoughts in this video.)

"Star Wars Rebels has more heart than you can possibly imagine. The show is truly about the characters. You feel for the orphan, you want this new group of rag tag rebels to take him in and to form that made family. We don’t learn everyone’s deep backstory, but we learn enough about the Empire and what it has taken from them that every time they have a victory against an Imperial stooge, you feel the justification." - Jason Ward, Making Star Wars

"The audience didn't hold back their excitement during the episode, cheering during some scenes and laughing loudly at others. The tone delivers on what the trailers have teased and harkens back to that golden original trilogy era. There may be darkness in this pre-A New Hope series but there’s a lot of hope and fun as well." - Lisa Granshaw, The Daily Dot

Big thanks to Lucasfilm for hosting this screening, and kudos to the attendees who took the time to share their thoughts with us! Star Wars Rebels is slated to premiere on the Disney Channel this October, and will subsequently continue to air on Disney XD.

By: Dominic Jones

New reports are flooding in that the Star Wars Episode VII crew is doing a location shoot on the island Skellig Michael, off the coast of South Kerry in Ireland.  Reports suggest that director JJ Abrams as well as Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill were on location.  Several of Hamill's children were also spotted in the area.  Abrams and the cast were reportedly flown in a helicopter to the set on the island.  No word on what exactly is going on there, or where in the galaxy Skellig Michael is supposed to be.  However, if Luke Skywalker is there, you can bet it's important!

72 year old Harrison Ford was recently photographed walking in Santa Monica, just six weeks after news broke that the actor had sustained an injury on the Star Wars set. Although Ford was seen walking unassisted, there has been no confirmation that he is fully recovered.

While filming for Episode VII took a two week break to account for Ford's recovery, Disney has stressed that the delay will not deter the film's December 18th, 2015 release date.

Simon Pegg Skirts Around Comments Alluding to Role in Star Wars

By: Lillian Skye

The flame behind the ongoing rumor that Simon Pegg will have a role in J.J. Abrams'Episode VII continues to be fueled by offhand comments, skillfully crafted answers, and well timed pauses.

This past week, Benedict Cumberbatch may have confirmed Pegg's involvement in Episode VII:

“I think J.J. is very good at creating something original out of something known," Cumberbatch told MTV News when he was asked about a possible involvement with the Star Wars franchise, "and I think apart from his continuing use of Simon Pegg — and who can blame him, frankly — it made sense not to do it.”

Whether or not Cumberbatch was simply pointing out the fact that Pegg has been involved with many of Abrams' recent projects such as Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, the rumors continue to flourish that the Spaced actor will be in Episode VII.

"J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends," said Pegg in response to Cumberbatch's comments. "I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face. The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.

When asked if he wasn't going to be in the movie, Pegg brought up his visit to the Episode VII set. "It’s amazing, and I love Star Wars. I want to see everything happening. It looks wonderful, and you need to believe those characters. Any type of stunt casting might just pop you out of the movie."

Last month, Episode VII actor Andy Serkis confirmed that his Imaginarium will be used for Star Wars. If Simon Pegg claims that his face would be too distracting in a Star Wars film, then perhaps he would be a useful candidate to play a motion capture character? Only time will tell.

Rian Johnson Talks Episode VIII

By: Benjamin Hart

Rian Johnson has pretty much been confirmed to be the director of Star Wars Episode VIII (and possibly IX), even though Lucasfilm has yet to comment on his involvement with the Saga. Now Johnson himself has begun talking about Star Wars. Sun Times reports that Johnson was a guest on Filmspotting Podcast and some interesting things to say about Episode VII, in a less direct fashion.

“I’m really excited about all the things I can’t tell you... I wanted to to play in this world, of literally the first movie my dad put me in the car to see,” Johnson said about his new project. He also went on to say that he assumes getting the job "was a clerical error, like in the movie ‘Brazil.’ There’s a Brian Johnson out there who is really mad.” He added that working at Lucasfilm is “kind of like summer camp.”

He also had something to say about previous Star Wars films, saying that, “There was something really beautiful about the prequels,” and stating his belief that 4-6 then 1-3 is his preferred viewing order of the original six because “storytelling-wise, 4-6 were constructed without the knowledge of the past.”

Be sure to check out the Sun Times'full summary of what was said at the event. Also, the Podcast episode that features Rian Johnson is scheduled to be released this Friday, so be on the lookout for that on Filmspotting.net.

Rumor: WWE Wrestler Sheamus to Play Darth Vader in Episode VII

By: Dominic Jones

File this one under the "Huh?" category.  The Irish Mirror is reporting that WWE Wrestler Sheamus was on set on Skillig Michael this past weekend, where it is believed that JJ Abrams was shooting scenes for Star Wars Episode VII (possibly with Mark Hamill).  Sheamus has previously portrayed Darth Vader in promotional videos.  Sheamus tweeted an image of the article saying, "I cant confirm that i wont not be reprising role of Darth Vader in ... I hope that's clear @IrishMirror ;)"
For the record, I sincerely doubt this will happen (it was just too funny not to report).  The Mirror is a British tabloid and British tabloids have a tendency not to be true.  Still, anything is possible.

DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: DARTH DUSTY

By: Darth Daddy

Yes, there is another Darth.   In the Star Wars custom action figure community there is no rule of two.

Darth Dusty is an artist that has been drawing, painting, and sculpting for over twenty-five years, and customizing for over ten. He mainly enjoys customizing figures from the Expanded Universe now known as Star Wars Legends, as well as creating characters of his own. His goal is to give people something rare and unique; to challenge himself to make customs of characters that may never see the light of day on a store shelf.

Mostly creating figures for adult collectors, Darth Dusty loves to incorporate soft goods, and hand sculpting new parts. Darth Dusty uses many materials, such as, Apoxie Sculpt, acrylic paints, casting resins, and even puffy paint, as key elements in each creation. Darth Dusty researches many of the figures he plans to build to get as much accuracy as possible without compromising the functionality of the action figure.

He has made the widest assortment of figures from the video games The Force Unleashed and The Force Unleashed II than any other customizer I've encountered and I'm a big fan of his samurai interpretations of Vader, the Stormtrooper and Boba Fett.  He's a huge talent!  I made a video of his work early last year if anyone wants to see more from this artist after reading this feature.

Fairly retired from doing commissioned figures, he loves hearing ideas on what figures to make. Darth Dusty keeps a list of characters on the back burner, so expect to see plenty more figures to come.

J.J. Abrams, Mark Hamill & Daisy Ridley Spotted At Skellig Michael

Following an earlier report that the film crew for Star Wars Episode VII had journeyed to Skellig Micheal island, just off the coast of Ireland, to film scenes, we now have photo evidence that famillar Star Wars cast and crew are on site. The production is believed to be a three day shoot and over the past few days several reports and photos have leaked out pointing to J.J. Abrams and Mark Hamill possibly being part of the entourage, which Star Wars 7 Newscovered in detail. Later photos of both Hamill and Abrams (below) surfaced confirming the rumors, and today, courtesy of a local newspaper(above), we have hard evidence that Daisy Ridley is among  them.

The Movie Bit also revealed a great many photos and videos of the Episode VII crew in the area, and reported some interesting tidbits of info, claiming that Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill did indeed shoot a scene together on the island.

So, what planet could this be? And what could Luke Skywalker and Kira Solo(or whatever her name is) be doing here? Leave your speculation in the comments below, or strike up a conversation in Club SWU on Facebook. We'd love to hear from you!

Kevin Kiner: Clone Wars Seasons 1-6 CD Soundtrack Coming

By Chris Seekell

Today Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels composer Kevin Kiner sat down for an interview with the hosts of the Everything Geek Podcast. In the interview he talked about his time on Clone Wars and what we can expect to hear in the Rebels soundtrack. He also revealed that Lucasfilm is working on releasing a full CD soundtrack for the entire Clone Wars series.

"We are just compiling a CD of Clone Wars Seasons 1-6."

Kevin went on to describe the differences between his compositions for Clone Wars and Rebels.

"[Rebels] is a cool reboot. I'm sure if you have seen any interviews with Dave Filoni or even myself, Dave's really talking about going back to A New Hope, going back to the adventure, serialized feel that the first film had. The musical sensibility is a lot closer to what John [Williams] did for that film specifically, A New Hope, than what we were doing on Clone Wars."

You can listen to the full interview here.

“I can’t believe he’s gone.”–Luke Skywalker

When we think of people who impact the lives of others, we often look to celebrities, movie stars, pop singers, or politicians. It’s all too rare that we find ourselves realizing that one person of such great importance can be a friend we never met.

Darryl Roberts was killed in a car accident in Utah. He leaves behind three daughters, one girlfriend, and over 50,000 Star Wars Geeks.

When I first met Darryl, it was when his brainchild was in its infancy. The “Star Wars Geeks of the World, Unite!” group was barely at a few hundred members. He founded it because he was sick of the turmoil and in-fighting between the fanbase. Darryl recognized the need for a “safe haven” for all of us Star Wars Geeks to escape the bitterness.

From that one group (which has now nearly reached 20,000 members), he branched out to create over a dozen additional groups and pages, a podcast, and a website (under construction when he died) all dedicated to the single greatest franchise in cinematic history. Darryl called it a “Family” rather than just a network because he believed in the fanbase to come together for each other based on the love we share for Star Wars.

The world in which we live grew a little darker a few days ago. The news that he was killed didn’t send ripples through the fanbase, it sent shockwaves through people’s hearts and minds. He never met George Lucas, he never shook Mark Hamill’s hand, and he didn’t collect rare or vintage collectibles. But what he did do was create something truly special that impacted the lives of tens of thousands of people.
Darryl was indeed taken from us all too soon. A man of such vision and dedication is rare today, no matter where you look. He was a rock, never wavering in his love not just for Star Wars, but for everyone he came into contact with. Over 50,000 people are proud to call themselves “Star Wars Geeks”; they wear it as a badge of honor bestowed upon them by a patriot of galactic magnitude.

I am proud to call him my friend, I am humbled to be a part of something so magnificent that he worked so hard for, and I know he would be honored to see how many lives he touched. We owe him a debt of gratitude we can never repay.

Buckets off for Darryl Roberts.

Rumor: Where Is Luke Skywalker & Who's Flying The Millennium Falcon In Episode VII?

By: Benjamin Hart

The Good folks at Latino Review have returned with another set of rumors concerning Star Wars Episode VII. First off, they claim to have more info on the heavily rumored "Search For Luke Skywalker" plot line:

"When Mark Hamill said his beard was “contractually obligated” I looked at Jedi Beards throughout the previous six films. Jedi, somehow, keep really clean beards. Mark Hamill’s beard is a wild mess. Why? Well Luke’s a CAPTIVE, silly, not a nomad."

They also go on to share more details about who will be in possession of the Millennium Falcon in Episode VII:

"Han Solo and Chewie lost the Millennium Falcon and Oscar Isaac’s character owns it now. I don’t know if Han’s new position as wife of a princess and man with kids made him want to settle down or if the Falcon is this universe’s most gambled ship (sorry Lando!), but Han and Chewbacca don’t have the Falcon because Oscar Isaacs has it."

They add that the rumors about the role of Oscar Isaac's character being expanded could have been the product of on set confusion if Isaac was seen piloting the Falcon.

As much as all of these rumors seems to be going on and on and could all very well be bogus, these tidbits make sense. Why exactly would Luke go into hiding if he didn't do so against his will? And Han loosing the Falcon in a similar fashion that he a first acquired it just sounds right. But nevertheless, this is just a rumor, fueled by speculation at that, so be sure take this with a major grain of salt.

Dave Filoni Interested in Directing A Stand-Alone Film

$

By: Lillian Skye

Although Dave Filoni has been busy working on animated Star Wars television series, the Star Wars Rebels executive producer has not ruled out the possibility of directing a live-action flick.

Slashfilm spoke with Filoni to discuss whether or not he would be interested in directing a spin-off film in the future  "If I were to get an opportunity like that A, I wouldn’t turn it down. B, I would see it as a great honor to do it," says Filoni. "And I would apply all my Jedi knowledge to doing it as best I can."

"I've got definitely more than a few ideas." He adds that he has several Star Wars stories that he would like to see finished and brought to life. For the time being, Filoni is satisfied to watch and see what J.J. Abrams, Godzilla's Gareth Edwards and Looper's Rian Johnson produce. "It’s kind of nice to have other really big head creatives working on Star Wars now."

Dave Filoni has had years of experience working with George Lucas and the creative team at Lucasfilm, and expressed that he can empathize with the directors and writers of the spin-off film scripts because he understands the pressure to produce material that will live up to the Star Wars legacy. "I’ll see them come up on continuity problems and I’m just like “Ha, ha, ha, yeah, I’ve been there. It’s great, isn’t it?” But the main thing I tell them is what a wonderful experience it’s truly gonna be."

Since Filoni is a Star Wars fan himself, he understands how attached the Star Wars community can be to certain characters, stories, and concepts. "Yes, they’re particular, yes, they know their stuff, but they love it and they’ve always embraced what we’ve done, but they challenge us and they should. They should challenge us to do new things and exciting things and, you know, that’s when our job is done its best."

Kickin' It Star Wars Style

By: Micaela Seekell

Not long after a Star Wars episode of Phineas and Ferb Disney gives us another special from a galaxy far, far away. Kickin' It will be airing their Star Wars episode this Monday, 7/6c on Dinsey XD. Kickin' It follows a karate instructor and his students as they go through some crazy situations that usually end with a martial arts battle. Leo Howard, who plays one of the main characters Jack, got his black belt at an early age and became a member of Sideswipe which is an acrobatic martial arts performance team. The plot for the episode is that Jack dreams he is in the Star Wars galaxy and encounters various characters like Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, C-3PO, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. With Leo's background and the fact he will be a jedi, I believe we should see some pretty awesome lightsaber fight scenes. You can check out the teaser below and check out the episode on Disney XD on Monday.

'Star Wars Rebels' Seven Minute Preview to Air August 4th on Disney XD

The official Disney XD Twitter account announced today that on August 4th at 8:45 pm, a seven minute Star Wars Rebels preview will air.
No word yet on what the preview will be about, however based on the picture perhaps we can assume it will focus on Zeb and Ezra.  This also sounds to me like it is a confirmation of a rumor we heard back in January, which stated that several vingettes would air beginning in August to preview the series.  This sounds like it will be one of those rumored vingettes.

So be sure to be in front of the TV (or set the DVR) to catch the preview August 4th (tonight!) at 8:45pm!
