By: Dominic Jones

It seems Lucasfilm's days of making non-Star Wars projects didn't end when the company was purchased by The Walt Disney Company in late 2012.  Lucasfilm announced today a new animated musical titled Strange Magic, will be released by Touchstone Pictures on January 23rd, 2015The film is based on a story by George Lucas and is directed by Gary Rydstrom and written by David Berenbaum (Elf).  The film was worked on mostly by the Lucasfilm Animation Studios in Singapore, which had previously worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  The film stars Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, newcomer Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare.  Strange Magic will feature music from the past six decades.  The film was apparently inspired by A Midsummer's Night Dream.

Am I the only one thinking this might be an interesting place to reveal a Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens teaser?  Regardless, it will an interesting film to see when it hits theaters on January 23rd.

Report: 'The Force Awakens' Scenes Filmed In Outdoor Tank

By: Benjamin Hart

Filming for Star Wars(Episode VII): The Force Awakens has officially wrapped, but we're continuing to get details about all that's been happening at Pinewood Studios these past several months. One of the latest nuggets of info comes from Pinewood's web site, where The Force Awakens' profile shows that the "Exterior tank" was used for filming, among many other stages. The tank, also know as the Paddock Tank, can hold 806,000 gallons of water and features a 240ft x 60ft blue/green screen backing. The official description reads:

"The tank can be used for model units or live action sequences and is conveniently located next to the Pinewood Studios Underwater Stage. The inner tank allows the depth needed for stunts or complex set construction within the tank."

An aerial view of the empty tank.

The tank is relatively shallow at 4ft deep, so any filming there was definitely done above the surface. Some of the leaked concept art we've seen features water, and the filming that was done on the island of Skellig Michael could give us clues as to what this water sequence will include. What kind of scene do you think, or hope, to see in the finished film? Let us know in the comments below.

We've been hearing for a while that Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd will be appearing in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  Now it seems we have our confirmation.  Lourd's grand mother, Debbie Reynolds appeared in Las Vegas this past week and let it slip that Lourd would be appearing in the film.  According to Vegas Seven, "Debbie mentioned that Carrie and Billie had been working on Star Wars: Episode VII–The Force Awakens with “Harrison Ford… and the other boychik.”

There you have it.  That's probably as close to a confirmation about Lourd's involvement in The Force Awakens.  It's nice to see that Star Wars is a family thing for the cast, as well as the fans!

This Bird Looks, And Sounds, Like R2-D2

By: Benjamin Hart

Many of us love to name our pets after Star Wars characters, or even dress them up in Star Wars costumes. But what if your pet could actually sound like a character from the Galaxy far, far away? Well, Carli Jeffrey knows what it's like, because her pet Budgie(short for budgerigar), "Bluey", can imitate R2-D2 almost perfectly. As seen in the video below, even the color of the small Bird's feathers are not unlike the iconic color scheme of the famous Astromech.

The video's description also explains that it didn't take much for Bluey to pick up this new, um, language:

"Bluey was our first budgie and our seven-year old daughter hand-raised him. He has always been a curious bird, he was really intrigued by our voices and the cockatoos we have in our garden - he even copied the noise the crested pigeons make when they take off. We played R2D2 sounds off Youtube to him four or five times and a few days later our daughter came running in saying he was doing R2D2. We were blown away that he picked it up so quickly! The other budgies in his cage started copying him but could only manage a few seconds at a time. Bluey also loves making lazer sounds, the R2D2 scream sound, kissing sounds, and he whispers English jibberish we can only make out a few words."

So, with plenty of new Star Wars films on the horizon, perhaps Lucasfilm could use Bluey for sound effects... Just a thought.

Rumor: Another 'The Force Awakens' Concept Art Description

By: Dominic Jones

Our friend Jason Ward from MakingStarWars.net has posted another one of his famous descriptions for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  This next one is described by Ward as "Really beautiful. Prequel beautiful."  Very intriguing.  As usual, there is a chance that this may not be true so if you're trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now!  This is your official SPOILER ALERT!  If you're cool with spoiler, then keep reading.

According to Jason Ward the scene is,
Off in the horizon the sky is blue and the hills are green. I assume this is the Skellig Michael planet based on the rolling green hill and the white fluffy clouds in the sky.

There’s a small bay with a city on both sides of it. On the right side of the city, there’s more water. Boats and shipping equipment can be see in its waters. There’s a bridge going across the bay connecting to more urban environments. There are several huge stone structures, sort of like stone skyscrapers in the shape of a lava lamp. The dark brown stones have blue trim applied in stripes down the buildings. Some of the buildings have ivy growing along the stones of the structures. There are few spire structures with golden trim on them. It almost looks like a really advanced society that used to make pyramids just kept building into the future.

Directly in front of the camera the Millennium Falcon bursts towards the city. The setting seems friendly and inviting. There are no signs of danger or foreboding. On the ground two X-wings are parked to the left. Nearby to the right of X-wings ,there is a speeder on the ground and it looks spiritually similar to the one we saw at the Greenham Common set, but its light grey with slight wings. It appears a lot of people are exciting a building. They’re very tiny as we’re really high up at the Falcon’s altitude looking down upon the city.

In the past we’ve discussed the castle on the Skellig Michael planet. In all the various iterations, the castle is left with plumes of smoke coming from its battlements and the Falcon zips away. I speculate this piece may take place after the heroes leave the castle. But I have to admit, it might be an alternate location for the rebel base we’ve seen at Greenham Common.

I find it it kind of funny that this photo released by Lucasfilm appears to be an alternate depiction of the Falcon (which is in the same position) going towards a body of water and coincidentally there’s a lava lamp in the corner. This is probably the outer atmosphere:
12802360045_2705b916e2_o
This appears to be another alternate closer to the city:
City
The I have seen is not unlike what can be seen in these pictures but there are differences on the takes by the artist.

Very interesting.  It will be interesting to see how this scene looks on screen on December 18, 2015!

Rumor: 'The Force Awakens' Set Reports

Our friends over at MakingStarWars.nethave heard from one of their sources who had a good look at some of the sets of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  They even got a picture!  Very intriguing.  As usual, there is a chance that this may not be true so if you're trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now!  This is your official SPOILER ALERT!  If you're cool with spoiler, then keep reading.

First up the source got a picture of some very intriguing stairs.  Check it out below,

Now where are those stairs leading?  Also, interesting to not, the wall under the stairs looks an awful lot like the one JJ Abrams and R2-D2 were in front of during their appearance on Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

Moving on their source had a description of what might be a Sith lair,
One set I saw, another inside set, was the most interesting.  Plenty of security.  As they were opening a double door (think hanger doors) to remove some set pieces (which were huge) the dark green curtains (like theater curtains) were pulled sideways to reveal something pretty spectacular.  Looked like it could have been some sort of Sith set, but this could just be me filling gaps.  It was dark grey, industrial looking metal parts, linked to dark grey rock sections (almost like a cave) and a very obvious dark red tone adjacent to all the main parts.

They also had a look at the famous snow stage,
The first set I saw looked like a large snow stage and was absolutely huge.  It was all outside and looked like fake snow laid on top of sand, so it could well have been a sand stage beforehand, as some of the fake snow had either melted or just faded.

The source also saw a set with a huge green screen,
On the other side of the stage was a huge green screen, say 40m by 10m where presumably they filled the gaps with CGI.  The terrain, dare I say it, was Hoth like and had a few elevation changes. I was reliably informed that there were loads of Stormtroopers on there a few weeks earlier (including Bond cast dressed in Stormtrooper outfits) and plenty of Star Wars machines.

The source also saw what they believe is the interior of an Imperial ship,
Another stage I saw was inside one of Pinewood’s huge “warehouses” and definitely the interior of an imperial ship, perhaps even a hanger, and was very similar in design to the original films in its grey tones and those white upright light sections we’ve seen before in the original movies (all be it not lit).  The only difference being the height of the set which was quite high implying it could have been a hanger?

And finally, the source also described a set that involved "the biggest green screen in Europe,"
The other outside set was set way back from the largest blue screen in Europe (which was unbelievably big – Google it).  This was the hardest one to work out and security were like Nazi’s. The security looked like bouncers and were literally forcibly intimidating us to remove ourselves from the location.  The set, from what I could see, looked like either charred remains of something big  or a burnt mountain?  Lots of pyro going on, smoke etc.  Very mucky looking.  Pretty exciting.

This is some very interesting stuff!  I can't wait to see it on screen on December 18th, 2015!

Dee Bradley Baker Joins 'Star Wars Rebels' Cast

Since 2008 Dee Bradley Baker become well know to Star Wars fans as the voice of every single Clone Trooper in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as many other characters and creatures. Now we have confirmation that the veteran voice actor is making the jump into another era of Star Was in the upcoming episode of Star Wars Rebels titled "Empire Day". Baker is providing the voice for a key character. Read on for more details, but be warned: SPOILERS are ahead!

-------

---------
----------

Dee Bradley Baker voices Ephraim Bridger, the father of Ezra. Ephraim's disembodied voice, along with Ezra's mother Mira(voiced by Kath Soucie), will speak to Ezra in at least one scene in the episode. The credits for "Empire day" confirmed their roles:

It's also worth mentioning that our friends at WolfPack Podcast have an interesting theory about Ephraim's true identity. They believe he is none other than Captain Rex from The Clone Wars:

"My theory is that Rex changed his name so that the Empire would never find him, and Ezra is at a age where Rex could totally be his father."

It's actually not that far fetched. Baker's voice for Ephraim is very close to his Clone Trooper voice, and as we saw in The Clone Wars episode "The Deserter", Clones have been know to go awol and start families of their own. The creators behind Rebels have made it clear that Stormtroopers in this time period are conscripts and not Clones. So what happened to all the Clones after the Clone War, especially the ever popular Captain Rex, who's story was left unresolved when The Clone Wars series ended? It would certainly be a great twist for Rebels, and would no doubt blow the minds of Clone Wars fans everywhere.

"Empire Day" is available to watch right now on Watch Disney XD if you are a Disney XD subscriber, and if not, you can catch it on Disney XD this Monday, November 27th, at 9pm ET/PT.

A great new video has been uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube account, featuring supervising director Dave Filoni talking about bringing the character of Darth Bane into the series.  The video is from a Star Wars: The Clone Wars"The Lost Missions" screening held at Lucasfilm several months ago.  Filoni discusses the look of Bane, as well as getting Mark Hamill to voice him.  Check it out below,

Some really cool insight from Filoni!  I love the story about Mark crashing a Clone Wars recording session and asking for a part! I hope they make more of this Q&A available for those of us that weren't there.  Don't forget, 'The Lost Missions' is available now on DVD and Blu-ray (and still on Netflix).  Check out my review of 'The Lost Missions' box set here.

If you were disappointed (like I was) that the decision was made post-pone indefinitely the 3D re-releases of the rest of the saga and you live in the San Rafael area (which I don't), then you're in luck!  The Christopher B. Smith Film Center is hosting a special series screenings of films worked legendary visual effects artist Dennis Muren, who worked on five of the Star Wars films.  As part of the series, there will be a rare screening of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clone in 3D, which Muren oversaw the conversion of.  The 3D conversion work on Episode II was done prior to the postponement and it has only been screened publicly one other time (Celebration Europe in 2013).  Muren will also introduce the film and take part in a Q&A afterwards.

Muren describes the Episode II 3D experience as being, "A different 3D experience from other films, very stylized, with the intent of telling the Star Wars story with heightened clarity and emotion…Impressionistic depth as opposed to scientific depth, with actors’ faces sculpted for drama and with sets so lifelike you feel you could walk into them."

This is a great opportunity for fans to see something special, that there is no guaranty will every be made widely available.  Click here for more details.

Star Wars Celebration Anaheim Poster Revealed

Lucasfilm's Star Wars Celebration Anaheim is rapidly approaching, and that can mean only one thing: the announcements awaken! (Get it? Like The Force Awaken?Get it?)  The LA Times Hero Complex has revealed the official poster art for Celebration, which takes place in Anaheim California from April 16th-19th, 2015.  The poster features Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and a Stormtrooper, as well as two X-Wings and a TIE Fighter, plus the Tatooine skyline.  Check it out below,

I must say I love the new design.  I'm glad we're moving away from the "party" design that was used for Celebrations VI and Europe II.  This new one really seems to be celebrating the legacy of the films.  Hopefully, this is the kick off of many Celebration announcements as we race towards April 2015.  Hope to see you all there!

DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: JRNY FAN

$
0
0

This week I figured I's show you all a little something different.  Instead of a Star Wars customizer that creates action figures, I figured I'd introduce you all to the artist JRNY FAN who makes Star Wars Custom Plastic Playsets, for the action figures we all love.

His Mission? Star Wars Playset Awesomeness.  And this guy really brings it!

JRNY FAN gave up hope long ago that Hasbro would ever give him the playsets he'd want. When the Star Wars line was relaunched in 1995, he wanted to have “one of every figure” that appeared in the films. He's been collecting Star Wars since he was 4 in 1980, so he really likes to integrate homages back to the vintage Kenner playsets wherever possible. His goal is to create playsets that would fit in his shelf space and give his figures worlds to inhabit, just as the old Kenner playsets used to. So, he tried his hand at crafting his own using a plastic called Instamorph (learn more about working with it). And even more recently entered the world of 3-D printing, which is helping him achieve some very impressive looking pieces.

Much like how George felt about his films, JRNY FAN's playsets aren’t “done.” He's always revising them, integrating new ideas, and reinventing past creations that are super functional from a design standpoint. He wants them to be constructed entirely of plastic - no foam, glue, clay, and ideally no paint. While he's certainly going for the spirit of the film, he's not trying to create a inch-by-inch recreation of the set and shooting exteriors. Instead, he's trying to create something that would come close to a "toy.” Aside from furnishings and accessories, these playsets are generally one piece, not held together by glue. He's been using a combination of PCL moldable plastic and PLA for 3-D printed pieces. He finds that the more that he works with the material, the better he gets at manipulating it. JRNY FAN has no real art background and he hasn't sculpted anything since he was in 4th grade.

The bad news is, Star Wars and the toys are the property of Lucasfilm/Disney/20th Century Fox and Kenner/Hasbro. His playsets are not for sale, simply personal custom display pieces.  The good news is that he offers a link on his website for Downloadable 3-D Models.  He also has a small web store with small diorama pieces that are worth a look at too.

I have a video that I posted that shows all these playsets in much greater detail so if you find these playsets as impressive as I do I suggest you give the slideshow a gander.

This particular concept trio is very interesting. This character is not a Sith/Evil Force user by the looks of him. The helmet he wears is the same as the “Darth Bane” helmeted figure we’ve seen in front of fire. However, this appears to be a pilot uniform. It appears this could be a Imperial Special Ops uniform, which would mean it was most likely designed for Boyega’s costume before his crash.
The tunic is sort of like the one Grand Moff Tarkin wears but its black and a little heavier. In the first concept, the helmet he’s wearing looks like the fire ship pilots from Revenge of the Sith, only black with a yellow stripe down the forehead, going to the back of the head. He has tight black gloves on. His black boots have a tool strapped to the left leg that resembles a hydropsanner. He wields a black staff.

The second piece shows the man in black, pretty much the same uniform, but he’s sitting on a speeder. The speeder looks a little like a black Kawasaki motorcycle but it has no wheels because it hovers. Its shape resembles a motorcycle more than anything we’ve seen in Star Wars.  It looks cool but its doesn’t really fit Star Wars and what’s established. It almost reminds me of the motorcycles from THX-1138. The helmet on this one shows what appears to be an updated Death Star Gunner helmet for the most part. However, the face shield is flat and extends over the face and a little above the helmet. In this piece he’s holding a blaster.

The final concept is the most interesting in that it is the Darth Bane style “Ninja” mask helmet we’ve described before. The helmet looks like McQuarrie’s proto-Vader mask in someways. The back helmet is very Darth Vader, but its shorter in the back. The eye visor is the same as the new Stormtroopers in appearance for the most part. It also has a Vader like mouth piece but its bulkier. The helmet has yellow ornate etchings around the visor.

My guess is this piece is somewhat exploratory. I’ve seen the TIE pilot helmets from the actual film and they clearly didn’t use this. But I’m not sure if Boyega being a special ops guy would wear that helmet. I also find it interesting that this “Shredder” style helmet design was used so much. I think the powers that be liked that design and it was explored in depth across many different pieces.

I find it interesting that the helmet is described as being like Darth Bane's, but the person wearing it is not a dark Force user.  Could it be coincidence?  MaybeCould it be because the person wearing the helt works for someone who's obsessed with Sith lore and modeled their underlings uniforms to look like the ancient Sith lord?  Well, that's a lot more fun to speculate about.
