'Detours' Episodes to Be Released At Some Point

By: Dominic Jones

Robot Chicken creators and Star Wars: Detours executive producers, Seth Green and Matt Senreich, hosted a panel at MegaCon and they discussed the future of Star Wars: Detours.  The reiterated the fact that the 30+ episodes of  Detours will be released at some point.

This reiterates what has been said in the past, however the fact that they keep mentioning it suggests that there is a real desire to release the episodes.  Seth Green has spoken in the past about the possibility of releasing the episodes online and given the recent success of Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Netflix, that seems to be a real possibility.

Star Wars: Detours was an animated comedy series made by Green and Senreich, along side Todd Grimes and Jennifer Hill.  The series was overseen by George Lucas and was slated to premiere in 2013 but was "postponed" following the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney and the announcement of the Sequel Trilogy.

Rumor: Episode VII Filming In Iceland

By: Benjamin Hart

Could the Episode VII film crew be headed to Iceland? Thanks to our friends at Jedi News, we have a report from an Icelandic site called Visir which claims that filming will soon be taking place in the country. Unfortunately I don't speak Icelandic, and the Google translation of the article is hard to understand. Nevertheless, from what I can decipher, their sources indicate that a film crew is set to come to Iceland at the end of April to do some "plate" shooting, which they explain involves a crew taking photographs of the landscape to be used as composited backgrounds in the film. The also say the that an Episode VII crew previously visited Iceland for a week and looked at highlands and glaciers as possible places to film. Visir adds that the Langjökull Glacier(seen above) was specifically considered for a filming location.

Not only should this be considered a rumor because it's not coming from an official source, but it could also be easily misinterpreted. So don't forget to take this a big grain of salt.

Witwer Planned on Auditioning for Episode VII

Sam Witwer, the voice actor most recognized for portraying Vader's apprentice Starkiller in The Force Unleashed, planned on auditioning for the latest Star Wars installment before "parameters of that role changed."

Witwer stated that he "did not go in [to audition], so I can tell you I did not go in.” Although he did not audition this time around, Witwer would be a welcome addition to the Star Wars saga since he's already proven his chops by portraying "the Son" and Darth Maul in The Clone Wars. If the door closed to work on VII, perhaps Witwer will have the opportunity to appear in spin off films, Episode VIII, or Episode IX.

Disney to Include Lucasfilm Titles in Cinema Con Presentation

By: Dominic Jones

The annual Cinema Con event, The National Association of Theatre Owners official convention, is taking place this week and Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn will be giving the Disney presentation, which promises to include updates on Lucasfilm titles.  The presentation is scheduled for 9:45 am on Wednesday (March 26th).  According The Hollywood Reporter, the presentation will include,

"Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn and executive vp, theatrical distribution Dave Hollis will host Disney's presentation, which will also cover Marvel and Lucasfilm titles. The studio's summer slate includes Maleficent, Million Dollar Arm and The Hundred-Foot Journey. Sources say Mad Men star Jon Hamm will be on-hand to speak about the sports drama, which will screen in full after the presentation. As for upcoming Marvel films, Guardians of the Galaxy comes to theaters in August, so leading man Chris Pratt is likely to drop by to tease the new superhero ensemble film."

It seems unlikely that anything new will be revealed at the event.  The presentation will likely be a rehash of already revealed material about Episode VII (set 30 after Return of the Jedi, trio of new young leads, very familiar faces, R2-D2, JJ Abrams, etc.) Following the D23 fiasco last summer, Disney has probably learned not to hype up the Lucasfilm aspect of the presentation if there isn't anything major to be revealed.

Regardless, we will wait with bated breath as reports roll in on Wednesday to see if, on the off chance, something was revealed.

Kane, Mayhew Talk Episode VII and Rebels at Star Wars Panel

$

By: Lillian Skye

Star Wars fans flocked to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida for Megacon 2014--a convention that celebrates anime, comic books, and sci-fi. A panel that took place on Sunday, March 23rd, centered around a Q&A with Star Wars: The Clone War's Tom Kane and Peter Mayhew, the actor behind the mighty Chewbacca.

Before the panel started, Megacon volunteers had to situate fans into the crowded room, announcing that the fire marshal had threatened to close the convention the day before due to the fire hazard of having a large amount of people lining the walls and blocking the room's exits. Fans were seated along the walls in the side, back, and front of the room, and a few were even sitting off in the front close to the table with Kane and Mayhew.

When everyone was finally seated, Tom Kane strode in followed by Peter Mayhew, who was being pushed behind in a wheelchair. As Tom Kane stepped up onto the platform and took a seat at the table, a volunteer helped Mayhew to stand and ascend the stairs. The stairs appeared to be a struggle, but Mayhew confidently walked to his seat utilizing his blue lightsaber cane, and when he finally sunk into his chair  he rose the lightsaber cane above his head very tusken raider-like as the panel cheered.

Tom Kane kicked off the panel by welcoming audience member's questions, calling out fans in the crowd to speak up. Several of the first few questions were directed at Mayhew, and one asked how he came up with Chewbacca's noticeable head tilt. Peter Mayhew said that the tilt was inspired by having to duck his head when walking through doorways. More questions about his Original Trilogy experience followed, and Peter discussed how hot the Chewie costume was, and even went into detail on how the costume he wore in Revenge of the Sith was made of different fur and felt differently than the one he wore in Empire.

Mayhew has proven to not only be a true Star Wars fan, but a knowledgeable one at that. Fan asked Mayhew about what he thought of the death of Chewie in the Expanded Universe novels, and Mayhew noted that when the book was going to print that publisher who called him said "EU books do not have a bearing on the movies." In fact, one "Chewbacca Dead" report that was supposed to discuss the death of the Wookiee in the novels, falsely printed the headline "Peter Mayhew Dead," to the shock of his family and friends. Peter also added that once a heartbroken younger fan approached him, concerned about Chewbacca. Mayhew told the boy "I'm here and as far as I'm concerned I ain't dead yet," and said that the boy walked away beaming.

Mayhew is even a fan of the Star Wars Holiday Special, and doesn't know why it was banned. "It paid mortgages." An unusual fact about the movie, he said, was that Chewie's father-in-law in the film was played by an 18 year old student, his wife was played by a man, and his son was played by a woman. Who knew?

One fan even dared to bring up Episode VII, questioning the 69 year old actor about his involvement. "Have you read about it on the internet?" The crowd chuckled, to which Peter concluded by saying that he did not "know anything about it."

Tom Kane spoke up on the topic, adding that Lucasfilm is one of the most secret productive companies in Hollywood. Kane noted that when Mayhew says he doesn't no anything about Episode VII, that he really doesn't know. He said that he recently spoke to Mark Hamill and asked when they were going to begin filming VII, and Kane added that Mark said that they don't tell him anything. The discussion continued when Peter said that it took them 2 1/2 years to film, work on, and eventually release  Episode V, and wondered "how the hell" they're going to complete the latest installment in only 18 months.

When a fan asked Tom Kane who his favorite character to voice in the Clone Wars (other than Yoda), was Kane was ready:  "They didn't use him much, they pretty much wrote him out of the show, but I liked Yularen." Kane noted how Yularen was he was a character that was in Star Wars "for twenty seconds" (he can be seen during the scene when Vader chokes Motti).

"It was kind of fun to sort of imagine the background story. Here's this guy who in the Clone Wars universe was clearly a "good guy," and a man of honor who somehow ends up on the bridge of the Death Star in a white uniform. We always kind of joked, Dave Filoni and I like "Maybe maybe he was really working for the Rebels. How did they get those plans? Hmmm....maybe Admiral Yularen?" So we wonder how did he go from that to that?"

Kane even discussed voice acting with the audience, leaning towards the mic as he demonstrated the voices of Yoda and Professor Utonium (from Power Puff Girls) for the crowd. He delved into Star Wars Rebels, and said that although voice acting has changed over the years, at the end of the day it's really just "100 or so" voice actors in the industry that you're hearing over and over again doing a lot of different voices for various projects. Kane said that if he was invited back for Rebels he'd love to provide a voice, but that fans are making a voice actors' job harder since they're getting better at picking them out. He said if anyone will return it Rebels from The Clone Wars, that it would be Dee lending his voice to a monster or alien. He even said there's a possibility JAT could join the series since Obi-Wan is out there somewhere. If the Clone Wars actors did return, he added, they would be voicing minor characters since Rebels is an entirely differnt show than Clone Wars.

When the panel ended, Kane stood up as Peter Mayhew, a staggering seven 7'2", rose to his feet and almost dwarfed the very tall voice behind the miniature Jedi Master. It was touching to see the actors who portray Chewie and Yoda, fan favorites, leaving the room together.

Yet, I still can't help but wonder if Tom Kane channeled his inner Frank Oz and uttered "Goodbye Chewbacca, miss you I will" to Mayhew at the end of the Con.

EA Modeling Star Wars Games After 'Batman: Arkham'

By: Benjamin Hart

Last year Electronic Arts(EA) acquired the rights make future Star Wars games. So far they have announced Star Wars: Battlefront and we've heard many details about their plans. Recently, EA's newly appointed CEO Andrew Wilson spoke out about his tenure so far, the future of EA and some of their many current titles, including Star Wars. Fortune reports that Wilson likens the Star Wars titles they are developing to the "Batman: Arkham" series of games by Warner Bros.

"What Warner Bros. did with Batman was take the core roots of that IP and manifest that inside the walls of Gotham City and delivered an interactive experience that had real ties to what you would see in the films and what you had read in the comics, while having its own life because it could provide such deep and more immersive storylines," said Wilson. "When we look at the Star Wars properties that's how we're looking at it. We're not trying to build a game that replicates the storyline of any particular film."

EA made it clear months ago that they would not be creating games based on the upcoming films. Mr. Wilson's comments both reiterate and expand on that. In my opinion, this is very good news. Games based on movies are rarely great(The Revenge Of The Sith Video Game was one of those rarities). Making games in this way allows for more creativity and for the games to stand on their own. Considering the success of the Arkham series, it's a good model to follow.

Clone Wars Review: 'The Disappeared' Arc

$
0
0

The Disappeared Parts I & II were definitely the surprise inclusion of the sixth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  Who would have expected a Jar Jar Binks and Mace Windu team up as two of the episodes to send off the series.  I know I didn't.  As soon as we heard that these episodes were coming, the joke that we were going to be seeing "The Continuing Adventures of Jar Jar Binks and Mace Windu" began.  And yet, it worked out so...perfectly!

These episodes were very much a The Clone Wars take on the buddy cop genre, which has often been the case when Jar Jar is involved.  It has been argued, going back to season one, that Jar Jar works best when he has a "straight man", whether it's C-3PO, Bail Organa, or Mace Windu, with him. This is something he did not really have in The Phantom Menace.  The pairing of Mace and Jar Jar was phenomenal, as Mace played the role of the audience, with his shock that Jar Jar is the only one the Bardottans would listen to!  Who can honestly say they saw that coming!  In addition, Mace's facial reactions when Jar Jar called him his "pal-o" and his "humble servant" were simply priceless!

The relationship between Jar Jar and Queen Julia was another surprise.  Looking at the Gungan and the Bardottan anatomy, there is a certain resemblance which leads me to speculate that these two species are related in some form, perhaps they are both descendants of the same species (like dogs and wolves).  This could explain some of the more physical attraction between the two (they spent the night "Meditating", if you catch my drift).  If I were feeling really nitpick-y, I would wonder when Jar Jar met Julia and spent several years with her because it seemed to me in Episode I he had never left Naboo and between Episodes I and II he was off working with Padme so when could he have met her?  But that's beside the point.

The Bardottans hatred for the Jedi seemed to be the same thing that was brought up by fans following the season two episode Children of the Force, where the idea that the Jedi took their recruits as infants was first brought up.  It is interesting to see that people in the galaxy have the same response that some fans did to this idea.  It also furthers the ideas established in episode like Defenders of Peace and Sabotage that not everyone in the galaxy likes the Jedi and what they have become.

The idea that there are other Force users in the galaxy other than the Jedi and Sith is a concept I have always found fascinating.  We know that the Jedi embrace the light side and the Sith embrace the dark side, so what do these other users do with the Force.  The idea that the Bardottans are tapping directly into the living Force for purposes of peace and serenity, sounds to me like what the Jedi Order likely started out as, before they took on the mantle of Peace Keepers.  Their use of the Force began to change until they wound up where they are, fighting the clone wars.  Further evidence of how the Jedi are losing their way is found in these episodes when Yoda refers to both the Jedi and the Sith as warriors.

Mother Talzin's claim that she is not a natural Force user, is an intriguing one as it begs the question of just what is Nightsister Magic?  Is it related to the Force, or is it something different?  I still believe that it is a manifestation of the dark side, that is called up through rituals and witchcraft, rather than meditation or anger.  To me, the term "natural Force user" is referring to the fact that accessing the Force through Nightsister magic is not natural, meaning no one should access the Force this way.  Talzin clearly needs the Force, she is fading and it is implied that the living Force gathered in the orb will sustain her.

Sticking with Talzin, it was great to see her again!  She has been one of the series' major mysteries going back to season three.  Her influence on the series and the war has been huge and yet we have no idea what her end game is.  None of the characters she has helped have really wound up where they want to be.  Ventress has gone off to become a bounty hunter, Savage Opress is dead, and Darth Maul has been captured by Sidious, not to mention the fact that the Nightsisters have been all but wiped out!  On top of that her power is clearly fading.  When she disappeared at the end of Part II it seemed painful and less smooth than we'd previously seen it.

It could be that here plans have all just failed, but she seems to smart for that.  She clearly had a plan when she took Ventress under her wing in Season 3, and in hindsight it seems this plan was all leading up to the return of Maul.  But Why?  And now that Maul is captured, has she failed?  I have a hard time believing that.  I still think she has a clear endgame in sight and either this was all part of an elaborate plan from her or she is adapting to unforeseen circumstances.  The Episode Guide on StarWars.com for Part II seems to confirm this as it leaves us with the cryptic line "Her story is not over yet."  We have since learned that she will be returning in the upcoming Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic series which is based on unproduced episodes for the series?  I, for one, certainly hope it is.

For as dark as some of the concepts were (stealing the living Force for a living being), the comedy in these episodes was spectacular as well.  Jar Jar was used for some quality humour (eg, not fart/poop jokes).  Two moments stood out to me in particular.  First, when Jar Jar and "Masteren Mace" first entered the Bardottan council and the guard behind Jar Jar hit the drum.  The poor gungan nearly jumped out of his skin and it was hilarious!  The other moment was Jar Jar's frustration with Mace taking the time to sense where the Queen was rather than just go running in.  The exchange where Mace says, "I see people, market, streets," to which Jar Jar replies, "Yep Meesa see that from here too,"  had me in stitches.

While this arc may not have had the major implications for the saga that the Order 66 and Yoda arcs had, it was a fun ride.  It was also a nice finale for Jar Jar and Mace, two characters we might not be seeing again for long while (or ever in the case of Jar Jar).  The arc had humor, romance, action, heart and little exploration of the Force, everything a great Star Wars story needs!

The Clone Wars #1 On Netflix Last Week!

$

By: Dominic Jones

We've known for six years that Star Wars: The Clone Wars was one of (if not the) best shows on television.  It seems the rest of the world is finally catching up.  The Clone Wars (series) was number on Netflix US last week, beating out powerhouses such as Family Guy, Archer, and The Office.  In addition, The Clone Wars (movie) finished fourth in the rankings, with only Turbo, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and The Hunger Games, finishing a head of it.

It's always great to see The Clone Wars getting the recognition it deserves (even though the series has been cancelled!)  Hopefully as Star Wars works its way back into the lime light of mainstream popular culture with the sequel trilogy, more and more people will discover, on Netflix, the incredible work done by Dave Filoni and crew.

Opinion: What's Next?

Rebels, Movies, and Games…What’s Next?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock since October of 2012, you know that Disney acquired the rights to just about all things Star Wars. They announced new movies, spin-off movies, origin stories, a review of the EU, a new TV series, new games, and so on. It seems that the dawn of a New Era is upon all Star Wars fans across our planet.

So, what else ya got?

Disney is known for exactly three things. First, for creating the happiest place on Earth. Seriously, visit Disney World for a week and (assuming you aren’t broke afterwards) you’ll be planning your trip back before you know it. Disney World is basically “The Nexus” crammed into sixty-six square miles of land. Second, they know marketing. Visit a Disney Store, you’ll see what I mean. Finally, they know crossovers. I’m not talking about little Easter Eggs like Rapunzel appearing in Frozen, I mean outright mergers.

Tempted to stop reading? Check out the crossovers that have come ONLY on the Disney Channel and Disney XD:
  • Austin & Jessie & Ally (Austin & Ally + Jessie)
  • Duncan Dream House (Good Luck Charlie + The Muppets)
  • Weasels on Deck (I’m in the Band + The Suite Life on Deck)
  • Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana (Wizards of Waverly Place + Suite Life on Deck + Hannah Montana)
  • That’s So Suite Life of Hannah Montana (That’s So Raven + The Suite Life + Hannah Montana)
But surely this is just limited to what goes on within Disney, right? Try telling that to “Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel” which crosses Phineas and Ferb with Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble…and don’t call me Shirley.

The list goes on to include Hercules teaming up with Aladdin, The Muppets meeting Mickey Mouse, Lilo and Stitch hanging out with Kim Possible, and so on.

Don’t get me started on Kingdom Hearts.

With Disney now owning Star Wars, is it inconceivable to believe that a Star Wars crossover is not in our future at some point? Speculation has been slowing ramping up about the possibility of seeing our beloved characters in different universes, not counting Patton Oswalt’s hilarious seven minute rant about Episode VII.

A possibility? Only time will tell, but this writer would not be surprised to see it happen. After all, it is what Disney is known for.

Report: J.J Abrams Looking For Unknown Actors For Episode VII

By: Benjamin Hart

We're only about a month away from the beginning of filming for Star Wars Episode VII. Some details have been revealed thus far, but a lot of huge questions about the film remain. One of those being; who will make up the cast? Aside from Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher's almost guaranteed involvement, we know nothing concrete about the characters and who might play them.

Dominic Monaghan, who's most famous for his roles in J.J Abrams'Lost series, as well as The Lord Of The Rings, spoke with Andy Riesmeyer on Ora.Tv's Dweebcast, and the conversation started off with some Star Wars talk. Monaghan discussed his close relationship Abrams, and when asked if he'd privately lobbied for a role in Episode VII, he had this to say:

"We've talked a few times about it and he just said, 'look, we're putting together a cast of essentially unknowns, you know. We want to follow the kind of '77, [A] New Hope type cast.... We don't want to fall into that mistake of People going 'Oh, it's that guy from the thing!'"

You can watch the full interview here:

Last year while being interviewed at a movie premiere, he hinted about possibly being cast in Episode VII. These conversations with Abrams may have been what he was referencing.

Of course, this isn't official. But coming from Dominic, it means a lot. If this is indeed true, it means J.J Abrams and crew will be using the formula George Lucas employed with the original six Star Wars films by selecting unknown actors to take the lead in Episode VII. Abrams has been applauded before for his casting decisions in films such as Star Trek.

December 18th, 2015 can't come soon enough!

Report: Peter Mayhew Filming in May

By: Lillian Skye

This morning, Comicpalooza Con, a convention held in Houston, Texas that features comics, sci-fi, anime, gaming, horror, and fantasy tweeted about an intriguing cancellation:

This year, Comicpalooza Con is being held Memorial Day weekend, May 23rd through the 26th.  As fans know, Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled to begin filming May 2014, and due to the fact that Mayhew is recognized for his role as the mighty Chewbacca, he could be reprising his role and a late  addition to the VII cast. Although he has repeatedly denied even knowing anything about Episode VII--at Megacon he asked an inquiring fan "Have you read about it on the internet? No, I don't know anything about it," he could have been bluffing. Or, if the filming of Episode VII is kept as under-wraps as Mayhew implied, he could have been informed of his involvement with the film just as recently as the internet heard the news.

In other news, there was not any Star Wars information released at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last week:

As May approaches, all fans can do is wait, speculate, and scour the internet for any details that could link their favorite characters and actors to the film.

Rumor: Star Wars Crossover TV Special In Production

By: Benjamin Hart

The Star Wars/Disney crossovers we all joked about after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 may end up becoming a reality! A site called Hollywood Informant is now claiming an "unnamed Star Wars Crossover Special" is currently in production. They write:

Sources close to the project are telling us that a new T.V. special is under production, that will be a crossover of Star Wars and another popular franchise.

They also point to Disney owned Pixar& Marvel as possible properties that could be mashed-up with Star Wars. As Hollywood Informant mentions, the hit Disney animated series Phineas and Ferb is slated to have a special Star Wars themed episode this summer, so it's not far fetched to believe that another Star Wars crossover is on the way. But as always, nothing is official until Lucasfilm or Disney confirms it, so take this with a grain of salt.

So, what other franchise would you like to see Star Wars combined with? Let us know in the comments below, or on Facebook or Twitter!

With filming for Star Wars Episode VII officially scheduled for this May, it seems Lucasfilm is hard at work priming Pinewood Studios to host the production of the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. Our friends at Jedi News caught wind of a tweet by Journalist, and frequent Episode VII hint dropper, Ali Arikan, who gave some interesting details about what's happening at the UK studio:

Interestingly enough, the idea of windows being covered at Pinewood sounds very similar to J.J Abrams' claims earlier this year about his staff covering the windows of his office with black paper while he was working on the Episode VII script. So needless to say, they are taking secrecy very seriously with Episode VII, and that's a good thing. As frustrating as it may be to some, the less we know about this film, the more we'll end up enjoying it in theaters come December 18th, 2015.

As always, nothing official until Lucasfilm says so!
