By: Benjamin Hart

Good news Star Wars Rebels fans! IGN is reporting that the second season of the critically acclaimed animated series will be premiering on Saturday, June 20th at 9:00pm on Disney XD! The hour long premiere episode, titled "The Siege Of Lothal", was screened a few weeks ago at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. With the cast and crew present, Lucasfilm revealed a great deal about the ongoing story, but did not give us a release date. Thankfully we now know when we can expect to see Kanan, Hera, Ezra and all our old favorites return to our TV screens alongside some new but familiar characters, such as Ahsoka Tano, Clone Captain Rex and Darth Vader. This season has been confirmed to have 22 episodes, much like it's predecessor The Clone Wars, which means Rebels will be there many weeks to fill the gap between now and the release of The Force Awakens.

Also, for this Monday, May the 4th, Disney XD will be hosting an awesome Star Wars marathon to celebrate "Star Wars Day" in style, including:

  • "Star Wars Rebels: The Ultimate Guide," a half-hour special recapping the entire first season of "Star Wars Rebels" will debut Monday, May 4 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT)
  • Marathons of "Star Wars Rebels" season one and "LEGO Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles."
  • Sneak peek at "LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales," an all-new series of event specials that will premiere on Disney XD this summer.
  • Star Wars-inspired episodes of "Phineas and Ferb,""Kickin' It" and "Lab Rats."

As someone who was fortunate enough to see the premiere at Celebration, I must say, season two is going to be amazing! The first episode continues the momentum that began at the end of season one builds on it. The stakes are raised even higher, and the fear for our heroes intensifies as a they face the greatest foe in the Galaxy. Check out the trailer below to get a taste of what's coming on June 20th!

Book Review: 'Lords of the Sith'

$

By: Dominic Jones

Warning: Contains Mild Spoilers

The fourth novel of the "new" Star Wars canon hit shelves earlier this week, though some of us were able to pick up a copy a week and a half early during Star Wars Celebration.  The novel is written by Paul S. Kemp and takes place between Episodes III and IV (between the novels Tarkin and A New Dawn if you wan to get really specific) and tells the tale of a failed assassination attempt on Darth Vader and The Emperor, aka Darth Sidious.

The novel is cover-to-cover action, with little down time, though it is that down time that makes the novel so compelling.  The novel gives us a brief insight into the relationship between Vader and Sidious.  Kemp paints the picture of a relationship built on distrust, as most Sith relationships are.  Sidious clearly understands how the rule of two works and knows that eventually Vader will plot to overthrow him.  Throughout the novel we see him constantly reminder Vader that he is the more powerful of the two.  Sidious also seems to be testing Vader's loyalty to the Sith.

Vader, on the other hand, hasn't quite reached the point of wanting to overthrow Sidious and the idea is mentioned only in passing and without much detail.  This, to me, suggests just how badly Obi-Wan broke Vader's spirit in Revenge of the Sith.  Having lost to Obi-Wan clearly changed just how powerful Vader thought he was.  Prior to that duel Anakin was making grand claims to Padme about being able to over throw Sidious, now eight years later he can barely bring himself to think of the idea.  It is implied in the novel, and I love this concept, that Vader believes he won't truly be able to overthrow Sidious until he kills Obi-Wan.  And if we look at the Original Trilogy it is after he kill Obi-Wan aboard the Death Star that he begins to have ideas about killing Sidious.  Three years after his "defeat" of Obi-Wan he is desperately seeking out "the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star" in the belief that this Force sensitive kid could help him bring down the Emperor, as he reveals to Luke at the end of the film.

And all this, comes from one single line in the book.  This is what I love about Star Wars, and Star Wars novels.  One simple line that could easily be taken as throwaway dialogue is causing me to reconsider the films that I have seen countless times.

Though the novel is titled Lords of the Sith, it could very easily be argued that the main character is Cham Syndulla.  Cham first appeared in the Season Episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, "Liberty on Ryloth" and later reappeared in the Season Three episode "Supply Lines."  Though we didn't know it back in 2009 when we were first introduced to Cham it seems he will be an important player in this era of Star Wars.  Not only does he star in this novel, but his daughter Hera in one of the principle characters on Star Wars Rebels.  Hera is not seen in the novel and is mentioned only once, however by witnessing Cham's struggle we can begin to understand how Hera became the character we met in A New Dawn and watch on Rebels

In Cham we see someone who is has been fighting for his entire life and is beginning to tire of it.  In The Clone Wars it was implied that he had been fighting for a long time and we get the sense in Lords of the Sith that he hasn't stopped fighting since then.  We also see how much he has lost.  Don't let the Disney logo on the back fool you, Lords of the Sith is a blood bath with seemingly important characters being killed off in an instant.  Kemp does a great job of making the reader feel every death, even when its minor characters.  This gives the reader an insight into how Cham must feel every time one of his soldiers is killed.

My one criticism of the book is that there is a creature attack on our heroes late in the book that seems unnecessary.  The intent of the sequence was likely to impress on the reader just how dangerous the terrain on Ryloth is.  However, after the first two-thirds or so of the novel were spent showing how credible a threat Vader, Sidous, and the Empire as a whole were, the Ryloth wilderness felt like child's play and out of place this late in the story.

I feel I also must touch on the character of Moff Delian Mors, due to the news that got out about her character before the novel's release.  Allow me to state very clearly that I am in favor of more diversity, of all kinds (race, gender, sexuality, etc.) in Star Wars and was very pleased when I heard this news.  I applaud Kemp for including this.  It was a subtle, blink-and-you-miss-it reveal late in the novel but it added a nice layer to Mors character.  It is not crucial to the story by any means, but it helps make the universe a more diverse place and more reflective of the world and Star Wars fandom.  And, as I've stated before, having more diversity in Star Wars makes it more accessible to more people which means more people will become fans and we will get to share our passion with more people and that can only be a good thing.

Finally, a couple of other quick observations about the novel.  I loved the way The Clone Wars was referenced throughout the novel, not only by Cham but more so by Vader and Sidious.  It was also interesting to see Sidious slip back into the benevolent Palpatine guise he utilized throughout the prequels during a sequence late in the novel.  Another nice touch is that, even though the novel doesn't necessarily tie directly into anything, it fits nicely with the tone established by previous novels and Rebels for this era.  The Empire is all powerful, Palpatine is keeping a his Sith powers a secret from the public, Vader is mysterious and almost more of a legend to the outside galaxy, and any Rebel movements are small and locally based, though there is a sense of something bigger on the horizon.  It is really nice to see such consistency across all platforms.

All in all Lords of the Sith is chilling story, that shows the tough side of a Rebellion.  In the films and TV series (thus far) we have mostly seen the major victories (the Battle of Hoth being the exception).  In Lords of the Sith, we follow a Rebel cell whose greatest achievement doesn't make a dent in the Empire.  We see the cost of rebelling, both in death toll but also in the mental state of Cham.  We see how difficult it must have been to begin a galaxy wide Rebellion.  And we get to see the true nature of the evil the rebellion must fight.  And to top it off, it's a great read

Score: 9/10

Josh Trank Leaves Second Star Wars Anthology Film

By: Dominic Jones

After missing out on his appearance at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim last month due to the flu, it seems Josh Trank will no longer be working on the second Star Wars Anthology film.  Lucasfilm made the announcement today that Trank had left the project and included statements from Trank and Lucasfilm VP of Development (aka Head of the Story Group) Kiri Hart.

"After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all."

Kiri Hart added,
"It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh.  We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best."

Work will continue on the film, though no word yet on who will be assuming the directing duties from Trank.  It is believed that Simon Kinberg is writing the film.

I have to say I'm sorry to see Trank go.  He is clearly a huge fan of the saga (he even made a fan film several years ago) and it would have been interesting to see his unique take on the galaxy far, far away.  On behalf of the The SWU, I want to thank Trank for his contributions to the universe and wish him the best of luck in whatever he goes on to do.

The reason for Trank's departure is unclear.  The Hollywood Reporter has been hearing some interesting rumors behind the scens about his time on Fantastic Four.  According to THR,

"Trank raised eyebrows when he didn't show up for a planned presentation at Disney's Star Wars Celebration in April. At the time, Disney and Trank said he was not feeling well, with Trank tweeting that he had "worst flu of my life." But sources say Trank was asked by Disney executives not to attend the event.

Rumors have persisted that Fox is unhappy with Trank's performance on Fantastic Four and that Kinberg, who is producing both that film and the second Star Wars spinoff, was getting cold feet about working with Trank again."
It's an unfortunate story if true.  And you have to wonder what went down on the set of Fantastic Four that would make Kinberg not want to work with Trank and cause Lucasfilm/Disney to let him go.  It will be interesting to see what else may come out about the reasons behind his departure.

Galactic Map Reveals New Planets?

$

By: Benjamin Hart

Star Wars 7 News is reporting that the official Italian Star Wars Facebook page recently posted a map of the Galaxy featuring many familiar names, along with some new ones. The post teases Star Wars Day, which will apparently be happening on May 3rd there. The map comes with no details or context, so we're left to presume a great deal. Curiously it's design is almost identical to Milan, Italy's Metro map. But the most intriguing aspect of this map is that it appears that all of the planets seen on it come from either the six films, The Clone Wars or Legends - except three: Jakku, Ikotch and Davaron.

We're actually quite familiar with Jakku by now, which was mentioned by J.J. Abrams at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim a few weeks back, thus confirming that the desert planet we see in The Force Awakens trailers is Jakku. But Ikotch and Davaron, on the other hand, are brand new. According to my research, these names have never before been associated with Star Wars.

So that leads us to some questions; are these actually new, never before seen planets? And if so, will we see them in soon to be released content, like The Force Awakens?

It seems implausible that they are randomly generated names with no purpose, given that all the rest of the names are previously established canon or Legends planets. It's possible "Davaron" is simply a misspelling of Devaron, but I'm just guessing. Regardless, it's obvious whoever made this map did their homework.

It's also worth noting that some have noticed that one of the planets is named "Kira" and are speculating that it is connected to the rumored code name for Rey(Daisy Ridley). Interestingly Kira is not a new planet. In fact, it can be traced all the way back to a Roleplaying game released in the 1990's. Also, the map missing some planets like Coruscant, Kamino, Sullust and others, so it may be focused on a specific region, such as the outer and/or mid rim, and not the entire Galaxy.

So, what do you think? Is this some elaborate joke? Or do we have something here? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Update: Lucasfilm's Matt Martin just tweeted this in response to the map:

Report: Early Kylo Ren Concept Art Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

After enjoying Star Wars as it is, it's always fascinating to look behind the scenes and see what could have been through concept art. Well, for The Force Awakens we might be getting a taste of that much sooner than normal. Indie Revolver, who were the first to reveal the new First Order Stormtroopers, among other things, have released a new, unseen piece of concept art from the film. They claim that it is an early design for Kylo Ren by concept artist Glyn Dillon, who ultimately designed Kylo's final helmet. It features a round, red and black mask and a single Lightsaber blade, as opposed to his now iconic tri-saber. You can check it out below:

Interestingly, they add that the circular face seen here was well liked among crew members, so much so that the design was applied to another group, which IR speculates are either Bounty Hunters or Tusken Raider-like Jakku scavengers. They also point out Kylo's Lightsaber hilt in the art, which actually corresponds with some earlier leaked concept art of a Lightsaber that was referred to as the "Wampa Saber", due to the Wampa claw embedded in it's pommel.

Of course, none of the info or photos here are confirmed by Lucasfilm, so we must take it all with a grain of salt. But given Indie Revolver's track record, I would say they are a trustworthy source. Nevertheless, it's amazing to get a deeper look in the production of this film well before we even see it. Speaking of which, December 18th can't come soon enough!

Rumor: Second Anthology Film Delayed Until 2019

By: Benjamin Hart

It seems the departure of Josh Trank as the director of the second Anthology film may have an effect on Disney and Lucasfilm's release schedule for future Star Wars films. The news came out yesterday that Trank, who directed Chronicle and currently in production Fantastic Four reboot, would be exiting the franchise due to unknown circumstances. Variety released their own report on the revelation, and added an interesting piece of information:

"The untitled “Star Wars” movie won’t be released until 2019, according to sources."

Disney and Lucasfilm officials stated several times that the plan for future Star Wars feature films is to release one per year, alternating between the numbered chapters of the Saga and stand alone Anthology films. Currently the only movies with confirmed release dates are Episode VII: The Force Awakens(December 18th, 2015), Rogue One(December 16th, 2016) and Episode VIII(May 26th, 2017). The second Anthology film was expected to follow this pattern with a release in 2018. If this film is being pushed back a year, it could have major repercussions on the rest of the schedule. Will there simply be a one year break with no Star Wars film? Could both the second Anthology film and Episode VIII be released in 2019? Or could Episode VIII somehow be pushed up to be released in 2018 as a replacement? Time will tell. Nevertheless, Lucasfilm/Disney have a dilemma on their hands if this is true.

By now everyone has seen the amazing cover for the next issue of Vanity Fair featuring the stars of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, and Chewbacca.  In addition to the cover, the magazine will feature an article on the new film and more pictures by famed photographer  Annie Lebowitz.  A preview of the article was recently posted on Vanity Fair's website, along with a behind the scenes video about Lebowitz photographing the sets and characters of the new film.  The video features short interview clips from Ridley as well as director JJ Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.   In addition, the video confirms two rumors that have been circulating for months now.  Check it out below,

The first revelation isn't much of a revelation as most fans had assumed this ever since we saw the first trailer, Adam Driver is playing Kylo Ren.  The second reveal confirms a story first reported by us here at The SWU that Lupita Nyong'o is playing a motion capture character (that's her seated in front of a camera wearing a grey suit with tonnes of little white dots on it).

The issue of Vanity Fair is available digitally on May 7th and on newsstands on May 12th, and promises to also have a first look at the character played by Gwendoline Christie.

Vanity Fair has been dominating the Star Wars headlines for the past 24 hours, and with good reason!  In addition to the phenomenal cover featuring the stars of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and a great behind the scenes video, the magazine has now given us our some new details about Lupita Nyong'o's character, who we now know is named Maz Kanata.  Maz Kanata is a motion capture character, meaning that Nyong'o will not actually appear on screen rather her motions, voice, and mannerisms are being used to create this new character.  We also learned that Maz Kanata is a pirate and hangs out with a large "Rogue's Gallery" of other aliens.  You can see these characters (but not Maz Kanata as far as I can tell) in the image below,

The magazine also had photographs by the legendary Annie Lebowitz of Adam Driver as a helmetless Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron hanging off the side of his X-Wing, Daisy Ridley as Rey on her speeder, and behind the scenes shots of Lupita Nyong'o performing her motion capture work, and of the legendary talent (l-r John Williams, Lawrence Kasdan, Kathleen Kennedy, and JJ Abrams).  Check those out below,

It's really great to see all these new images and get these new details!  It's a great May the 4th gift!

Amidst the bevy of official news about Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens there is still room for rumors, and we have got a fascinating one today.  Our friends over at MakingStarWars.net dropped this rumor describing what we can only assume is a pivotal moment in the film for two of the main characters, complete with a chilling line of dialogue.  As usual, there is a chance that this could turn out to be false, but if you trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now!  This is your SPOILER ALERT!  And if you do choose to read, be very careful to ensure that you don't share this story with people who don't want to be spoiled.

This rumor sheds some more light and offers more details about various rumors we have heard up to this point, as well as giving us some new information.  And for those of you who are new to the rumors, or simply forgotten, "Uber" is Andy Serkis, "The General" is Domhnall Gleeson, Korr Sella is Maise Richardson-Sellers, Captain Phasma is Gwendoline Christie, and "Rose" is the code name for Lupita Nyong'o's character Maz Kanata.  According to Jason over at MSW,
If you recall, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 head for the green planet (that everyone that sees it thinks is Yavin IV). Rey is overcome by the beauty of this green world after having resided on the desolate Jakku for a very long time. Rey does not have a beautiful time on the green world though.

After they meet “Rose” in a pub, they head to the underground of the pub. I believe Korr Sella, an emissary for Leia, is also at the pub to speak to “Rose,” probably about what Poe Dameron encountered on Jakku. However, “Rose” is already in the catacombs below the pub inducing a vision of the past for the band of heroes. “Rose” believes she knows why the lightsaber everyone is after came to Rey but Rey doesn’t want it and she runs from the pub.

Above the green planet, “Uber” is in communication with Kylo Ren and the “The General.” “Uber” orders “The Catapult” weapon to be used against Han Solo, Rose, and the rest of the heroes. Kylo is apprehensive and “Uber” orders him not to “be so sentimental.” Down on the surface, Rey looks back to see a scene of destruction unfold before her.  The weapon is fired, killing Kor Sella, taking out a “castle,” “the tunnel of love,” and the pub.

The Resistance witnesses Kor Sella’s death and springs into action. This is where we believe we will see Admiral Ackbar, very old, in a new, slightly green outfit. He is part of Leia’s “staff.” Note: Tim Rose canceled convention appearances around this time which may mean he’s back on Ackbar puppetry.

INTERIOR DAY RESISTANCE BASE – MAP ROOM Leia and staff react to Tunnel of Love unhappy ending

Thankfully the heroes are in the catacombs below the pub and survive the assault after suffering through some shaking and rumbling. They head through tunnels where they meet some Stormtrooper resistance and “Rose” uses her “special powers” to dispatch them. I assume this means she uses the Force to slam them against a wall or something unless she Jedi Mind Tricks them.

When the heroes get outside of the tunnels, things looks really dire for them. But a “black tie makes all the difference.” We believe this is when Poe Dameron returns, either with a fixed TIE he crashed back on Jakku or in the black X-wing without an explanation as far as we know. The point is, it seems Poe returns to save the day using his piloting skills.

Rey saw the First Order invade the green planet and also witnessed the destruction of the buildings by the super weapon.  She’s spotted by First Order forces very quickly. Kylo Ren and his troops (who are on their way to survey the damage from the weapon) pursue Rey and capture her. Finn witnesses the capture from afar but can’t save her. BB-8 hides and evades capture too and the heroes meet up with Leia, the droids, and head for the Resistance base without Rey. (So if you’re wondering, Rey doesn’t meet Leia at this point in the film.)

Rey is then taken to the First Order Castle on the snow planet and imprisoned. Rey is escorted to her interrogation by Captain Phasma. We have reason to believe Kylo might not be in his armor for this sequence. (For some scenes, Kylo doesn’t wear his armor but instead wears the same black uniform “The General” wears with his hair slicked back, a little long, just above the shoulders).

Kylo uses his “powers” during his interrogation of Rey. Rey reverses this “probe” from Kylo as she’s mentally stronger than him or just more powerful in the Force. She then tells him:

You’ll never be as powerful as Darth Vader.”

She apparently has learned something about Kylo instead of Kylo learning something about her during this metaphysical connection they have formed.  But it isn’t a total win for Rey as Kylo does figure out he doesn’t need the lightsaber to carry out his goals and there is another way. (Note: the season premiere of Star Wars Rebels has a sequence that I believe is reminiscent of this between Ahsoka and Darth Vader.) Kylo then leaves to report to “Uber” about Rey and BB-8.

INTERIOR DAY FIRST ORDER CASTLE – DUNGEON Kylo Ren Tries to learn all he can from Kira. She turns the tables.

INTERIOR DAY FIRST ORDER CASTLE – CORRIDOR #1 Kylo Ren pauses outside the dungeon, flustered.

Shortly after this, Rey uses her “powers” to trick her Stormtrooper guards into leaving her unattended. We then see Rey escape via the ventilation system of the First Order Castle. She meets up with Finn, Han, and Chewbacca after they crash in the woods. She is touched the crew came back for her. I’m not sure if this is a comedic coincidence and Finn accepts credit for going back for her when it was just a coincidence or if she was part of the plan for Han Solo the whole time.

As the assault on the castle moves forward we are treated to a space and atmospheric battle that ends up relying on some good old fashioned explosives by Han and Chewbacca.

This sounds like it will be an intense scene.  We get more implications that Kylo Ren has some kind of connection to our heroes, whether its Han Solo or Rey or both.  I love the idea of this "Uber" telling him not to get sentimental, suggesting that there is still some level of conflict within him.  The confrontation between Rey and Kylo sounds like it will be an intense sequence.  Perhaps the two are unaware of any connections they might have (be they siblings, cousins, etc.) and the line, "You’ll never be as powerful as Darth Vader" is chilling.
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

This has been one awesome Star Wars day, hasn't it? Thanks to Vanity Fair we have been treated to a ton of new images from the set of Episode VII: The Force Awakens, as well as some confirmations of some new characters and the actors who play them. The latest reveal comes in the form of a page from the upcoming June issue of Vanity Fair brought to us by the folks at Star Wars-Universe. It gives us a full body shot of a Captain Phasma, seen in the second teaser trailer, and confirms the actor under the mask. Check it out below, and of course, SPOILERS for those looking to avoid that sort of thing.

The text reads:

"THE PHASMA MENACE: First Order officer Captain Phasma(Gwendoline Christie) surveys the rubble following an attack..."

The text goes on to tell about a photo of Lupita Nyong'o performing her motion capture character Maz Kanata, which was revealed earlier today.

Although it has long been believed that Gwendoline Christie was the one wearing the chrome trooper armor, it's awesome to have it officially confirmed. And I have to say, she looks amazing!

Update:Vanity Fair has officially released the photo on their site, along with a new article. They confirm that, unfortunately, this will be the final portrait released from the amazing collection of photos taken by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. They add that even though Phasma is fighting on the side of the new bad guys, the First Order, don't assume she's pure evil.
