Star Wars Battlefront: Behind the Scenes on the Development of Sullust

By: Dominic Jones

In celebration of Star Wars Day the team at DICE, who are currently hard at work on the upcoming video game Star Wars: Battlefront which is slated for a November 17th release date, gave fans a behind the scenes look at the development of the look of the planet Sullust.  It was announced back at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim that the game would give fans their first official look at the canon version of the planet Sullust.  An in-depth article detailing the various design steps was posted over at EA's official Star Wars website, here are some highlights.

The team described the orinigal description given to the concept artists,

"When referring to the direction, the concept artist stated, “With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke…everything to make it really colorful yet imposing and threatening.” It took a while to nail down the specifics but once completed, the team presented the design and direction to Lucasfilm. Working in collaboration with the teams at Lucasfilm, it was decided that this visual design would be a perfect look for the planet Sullust, mentioned but not seen in Return of the Jedi."

The crew then used Iceland as a basis to design the planet,

Close to Sweden, Iceland proved to be a unique and ideal location which in multiple areas looked like another planet. Andrew Hamilton, Lead Environment Artist, and members from the team at DICE set out to study and capture the desolate Icelandic environment mentioning, “it’s very barren in a beautiful way. It hints at all the features in our concept and all the content we needed to gather…all the materials, rock shapes and even the lava.”

When the team returned to Stockholm with reference footage, Petter Skold, Senior Level Artist and Planet Owner of Sullust, set out to bring the planet to life. “We used the source material that we gathered from Iceland to shift and bend to the design detailed in our concepts, which was very fun and difficult process,” said the Senior Level Artist. While difficult, this process has paid off allowing Petter and the rest of the team to create an iconic planet we are very proud of. On the process, Skold stated, “this was different than content captured from locations of Endor, Hoth and Tatooine which could be used right away.”

And finally, we get confirmation that there will be 12 multiplayer maps included in Star Wars: Battlefront,
"Of the 12 multiplayer maps in Star Wars Battlefront (there are even more locations when you include the Star Wars Battlefront Missions), some feel immediately familiar — such as the lush forests of Endor or the tundra of Hoth that allow you to re-live your favorite moments from the films. Some of the maps support our epic modes like Walker Assault, while others are tailored to more intimate, close quarters combat. Our goal is to bring a variety of battle fantasies to life, with map design catering to the modes that will play out on those maps. Above all, we want you to create new memories of your own in new places you've never seen before."

The amount of work and detail that has gone into the development of Battlefront is amazing, and I can't wait to pick up the game this November.

Rumor: Second Star Wars Anthology Film to Tell Boba Fett's Origin Story

By: Dominic Jones

One the rumors that just won't die is back again.  The Wrap is reporting that the second Star Wars Anthology film, the film Josh Trank was working on, will tell Boba Fett's origin story.  This goes back to the very first rumors about the Anthology Films (or Stand Alone Films, as they were known up until recently) from February 2013, just four months after the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm.  Disney declined to comment.

According to The Wrap,Simon Kinberg is a key player in this film.  The Wrap writes,
"Writer-producer Simon Kinberg has been closely involved in the creative process for the second anthology film, which is set in a separate movie universe that is not associated with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” or upcoming Episodes VIII and IX."

Right now, the only thing we really know about this film, other than the fact that Trank has quit the directing job, is that the code name is "Tin Can,"  which could very well be referring to Fett's Helmet (it's kind of can shaped).

I also find it interesting to see that the film is being called an origin story.  I thought we had already seen Fett's origin story during the prequels.  I'm willing to bet that this story will have something to do with Fett acquiring his famous Mandalorian armor or perhaps one of his first missions for either Jabba the Hutt or Darth Vader (or both).

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Star Wars Officially Announced as Part of Disney Infinity 3.0

By: Dominic Jones

We've been hearing about this for a while, but Game Informer has finally officially confirmed it, Disney Infinity 3.0 will feature Star Wars characters and playsets.  The game will feature characters from all across the saga including The Clone Wars.  According to Game Informer,

"Star Wars fandom is often divided between the two trilogies, and Disney Infinity 3.0 is catering to both audiences. Avalanche returns at the head of development while recruiting other studios to work on specific packs and systems. Ninja Theory’s (Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword) pack-in playset, Twilight of the Republic, follows Anakin and Ahsoka as they fight to uncover who’s behind a freshly minted droid army. The story is set after Star Wars: Episode II, and it features land and space battles with plenty of melee combat. Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Darth Maul can enter the fray, too, as separately sold figures. Studio Gobo’s (Disney Infinity's Pirates of the Caribbean playset) Rise Against the Empire is a highlight reel of sorts that follows the events of the classic trilogy. Luke and Leia tangle with Darth Vader and his forces through memorable sequences, including the battle of Yavin as well as time on Hoth and Tatooine. Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Darth Vader figures will be available individually. Star Wars characters can cross over between the Star Wars playsets, too, which could lead to some canonically unsound (but fun) scenarios."

Check out the preview of Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars below,

This looks very cool and like it will be a lot of fun for kids.  I'm also very pleased to see the game is covering all aspects of the saga, including the prequels, originals, and The Clone Wars, whereas certain other games are not.

UPDATE: StarWars.com has also confirmed that a new playste will be available this winter that will tie in to Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens!

Vanity Fair Reveals Another 'The Force Awakens' Photo & J.J. Abrams Interview Preview

By: Benjamin Hart

This year's Star Wars day was among the best ever thanks to Vanity Fair! Yesterday the Magazine rocked the Internet by releasing a series of photos from the set of Episode VII: The Force Awakens, taken by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. During the reveals, Vanity Fair also promised to send yet another new photo to subscribers of their newsletter. Today they kept their promise, but admitted it didn't turn out as they originally planned. Apparently the photo of Captain Phasma that leaked yesterday was intended to be released in the newsletter today. To make up for the mishap, VF unveiled a new photo of Lupita Nyong'o performing her motion capture character Maz Kanata, as well as our first look at contributing editor Bruce Handy's interview with director J.J. Abrams, featuring questions and answers that were cut from the interview which is set to be released tomorrow on VanityFair.com. You can check out the photo above and the interview below:

Bruce Handy: Your movie is taking place 30-something years after Return of the Jedi. Are you going to give it some of that fill-in-blanks quality, in terms of whatever’s happened in the Star Wars galaxy across those decades?

J.J. Abrams: Well, what’s cool is we’ve obviously had a lot of time [during the development process] to talk about what’s happened outside of the borders of the story that you’re seeing. So there are, of course, references to things, and some are very oblique so that hopefully the audience can infer what the characters are referring to. We used to have more references to things that we pulled out because they almost felt like they were trying too hard to allude to something. I think that the key is—and whether we’ve accomplished that or not is, of course, up to the audience—but the key is that references be essential so that you don’t reference a lot of things that feel like, oh, we’re laying pipe for, you know, an animated series or further movies. It should feel like things are being referenced for a reason.

Tell me about what it was like working on the new film both as its writer-director and as a hard-core Star Wars fan going back to your childhood.

Maybe the weirdest moment, which came months after production, was the first time I sat down with John Williams to show him about a half an hour of the movie. I can’t describe the feeling. All I will say is, just to state the facts of it: I am about to show John Williams 30 minutes of a Star Wars movie that he has not seen [and] that I directed. That’s probably as surreal as it gets in my professional life experience.

The first three Star Wars movies had a certain knowingness, because of the way the characters are, so archetypal, and the way they reference a lot of film history, like Luke gazing out at the two setting suns the way someone would in a John Ford Western. That was such a part of the whole “movie brat” thing in the 70s, that George Lucas was a part of. Did you fool around with any of those kinds of nods at movie history?

There are a few specific references that are kind of my own little stupid, secret ones. But what I realized early on was it was all about point of view—meaning it’s not like you just objectively throw in a star field or a spaceship or a desert planet or whatever the thing. The question is, who is that person in that experience? Why does it matter to them? What are they desperate for or afraid of? For me, you could reference all the stuff you want, but the experience of the audience in this is that they’ve got to be sitting with someone who happens to be on-screen going through these experiences. And then that’s not just a desert planet; it could be the most desperate place in the world. Or that’s not just a spaceship flying by; it could be the greatest, most heroic moment of your life. That, to me, has been the constant struggle: to make sure that none of these things are treated like either they’re a museum piece and we’re trying to honor them or they’re gratuitous and thrown in because, well, it’s a Star Wars movie so you’ve got to put these things in. Everything has got to be essential to the characters in the film.

The June issue of Vanity Fair featuring The Force Awakens cover and all the photos that have been revealed will be available digitally on May 7th and on newsstands on May 12th.

Oscar Isaac Shares What He Would Like Poe Dameron's Homeworld To Be

By: Dominic Jones

Oscar Isaac is by far the most prolific of the new main trio of stars from Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and with that comes many, many opportunities for the press to ask him about Star Wars and for him to dodge around the question.  This time he was asked about where his character Poe Dameron hails from in the galaxy far, far away.  While Isaac did not reveal anything new, he did share where, if it was up to him, Poe would be from.  Isaac is of Guatemalan heritage and because of this he would hope that Poe would be from Yavin IV, which Tikal, the ancient Mayan city in Guatemala was used as the shooting location back in 1976 on the original Star Wars film.

Isaac told My San Antonio,
"What's actually very interesting is that Yavin ... at the end of the very first 'Star Wars' ... that last scene was shot in Guatemala and you know, I think that Poe Dameron is from that planet ... and that's a beautiful coincidence"

Remember this is not official, this isn't a spoiler from the film, this is simply Isaac sharing his thoughts about what he would like to happen in The Force Awakens.

Disney Confirms Star Wars Presence at D23 Expo 2015

By: Dominic Jones

It's no real surprise that Disney's $4.05 Billion franchise will be a big part of their bi-annual fan convention.  But it's always nice to get confirmation.  Disney confirmed that Star Wars will be a big part of the convention this week, along with Marvel, Pixar, and other Disney properties.  D23 takes place at the Anaheim Convention Center (where Celebration was held last month) from August 14 to 16.  Disney also promises that fans will get to see previews of these properties in Hall D23, aka Hall D at the convention center, aka what was the Celebration Stage at Celebration Anaheim.

I would not be surprised if we see the next trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens at D23.  The timing makes sense.  I expect Disney/Lucasfilm would want a trailer in theaters to coincide with the release of the toys on September 4th (aka Force Friday) and D23 is about three weeks before that.  This would make D23 the ideal time to debut the trailer.  It would be similar to what was done with this most recent trailer which was revealed at Celebration and then was released in theaters with Avengers: Age of Ultron, three weeks later.

Regardless, hopefully they have more than what they had two years ago at the last D23 when Disney Chairman Alan Horn was booed off stage for not revealing anything about the film.  But you can bet that Disney has something very different in store seeing as, unlike 2013 when the film was still being written and cast, the film has wrapped production and is about half way through post production.  If not a trailer, could D23 be the place we see the first full clip from The Force Awakens?  I still think that's unlikely and that a trailer is the safest bet.

Rumor: Concept Art of Lupita Nyong'o's Maz Kanata Leaked

By: Dominic Jones

Earlier this week Vanity Fair confirmed that Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) would be playing a motion capture character in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.  They also revealed that the character's name is Maz Kanata.  They didn't, however, show us an images of Maz.  Indie Revolver has stepped in with a piece of concept art of Maz.  Now, as usual, there is is chance this may not be Maz (or at least, not the final version) but if you are trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now.  This is your SPOILER ALERT!

Check out the image below,

Now, eagle eyed readers will have notices in the most recent trailer for The Force Awakens that the hand that gives the lightsaber to (who we believe is) Leia is an alien hand and in the top left part of the frame you can see very briefly a portion of the alien face.  See below,

The main difference between the screen shot from the trailer and the leaked concept art is that character in the trailer is orange and the character in the concept art is green/grey/blue.  The explanation is likely that the concept art is an early design and the character changed color as the design phase of the film progressed.  Other than that, the quick look at the character's face that we get does look very similar to the concept art.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Report: More Rumors & Teases Of Visceral's Star Wars Game

By: Benjamin Hart

For the past few weeks, and really the past decade, Star Wars gamers having been getting hyped about Star Wars Battlefront, which is being done by EA's Swedish developer DICE slated for release on November 17th. But Battlefront is far from the only Star Wars video game currently in development. Last year we learned that another of EA's development companies, Visceral, is working on a Star Wars game of their own, which is rumored to be focused on Han Solo. Amy Hennig, who is the creative director on the game, and Todd Stashwick, co-writer of the game, have teased their involvement in the project several times on social media. A recent photo shared by Stashwick on Instagram, which shows him with Hennig surrounded by various Star Wars collectibles, has led to more speculation about what exactly the two are working on. You can check that out below:

A photo posted by Todd Stashwick (@tstashwick) on

The Han Solo Black Series action figure, along with Stashwick's "I'll be your scoundrel" T-shirt seem to hint that the earlier rumors may very well be true, and Visceral could indeed be working on a Han Solo game. The folks at Star Wars 7 News chimed in as well, sighting inside sources that claim that the game will be a third person action game featuring Han Solo smuggling and "something going on with bounty hunters".  They also add that it being built on the cryengine and could incorporate some early concepts from the canceled Star Wars 1313 game. The suggest that the first footage from this game will premiere at this year's E3 in Los Angeles. coming up June 16th - 18th. If that is true, we're a little over a month away from finally see what Hennig and Stashwick have been up to.

Report: Another 'The Force Awakens' Filming Location Revealed

By: Benjamin Hart

Even though filming for The Force Awakens has long been done, that hasn't stopped details about the various filming locations from continuing to turn up. This latest bit of info comes from the local British news site Cumbria Live. They are reporting that one of the scenes seen in the newest teaser trailer for Episode VII was filmed on a local lake in the UK. They claim that nearby Derwentwater lake is the site where a film crew visited to shoot footage for The Force Awakens which would be used for scenes in both trailers where Poe Dameron and his X-Wing wingmates can be seen flying over water on a still unknown planet. A local newspaper was the first to blow the film crew's cover when they spoke  to the manager of a hotel in the nearby town of Barrowdale who confirmed they had stayed there and had been using a Helicopter to film aerial shots of the area.

Cumbria Live also had this to say about the footage:

"The Cumbrian lake is being used to create a new alien landscape for the franchise which has also incorporated planets covered in forest, swamps and lava.... The footage of the X Wing fighters uses a mixture of CGI and practical effects to create the effect of the ships flying over the water’s surface."

They also mention their hopes that the trailers and the film will bring attention to Cumbria and will encourage tourism to the area. With Star Wars Celebration headed to London next year, many Star Wars fans may make the trek to the lake to see where the X-Wings flew in person.

Check out both trailers below to see the scenes discussed above:

George Lucas Explains His Sequel Trilogy Treatment Featured Children "In Their 20s"

By: Dominic Jones

There has been a lot of stories recently about what Star Wars creator George Lucas' original vision for the sequel trilogy was.  Reports suggested that Lucas had originally intended to begin the trilogy with the next generation as children, much like Anakin Skywalker in Episode I and among the many changes JJ Abrams and his crew made were to change the age of the children to being in their twenties.  Turns out, this was false and Lucas always intended for the next generation to be in the sequel trilogy as twenty-somethings.  In an interview with Stephen Colbert at the Tribeca Film Festival, which took place (and was available online) weeks before the Vanity Fair story, Lucas said,

"The original Saga was about the father, the children, and the grandchildren. That’s not a secret to anybody, it’s even in the novels and everything. The children were in their 20s and everything, so it wasn’t The Phantom Menace again."

Let's be clear about this.  This is not Lucas "responding" to the rumors.  This is something Lucas said weeks before the Vanity Fair article which suggested his treatments were about little kids.  I also find it very telling that there are no actual quotes from JJ Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, Lawrence Kasdan, Bob Iger, or anybody close to the production actually quoted saying that.  The only person who we have a quote from is Lucas and the quote was several weeks old when the story began being circulated.  Clearly there was some miscommunication somewhere that led to this false rumor being started.

Billie Lourd Confirms She Will Not Play a Young Princess Leia in 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

We've known for a while now that Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd would be appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.  Who she is playing is still yet to be confirmed, and rumors had her playing a young Princess Leia in flashback scenes.  Lourd, who is currently promoting her upcoming role in the film Scream Queens, revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she while she is in the film, she is not playing a young version of the character her mother made famous back in 1977.  Lourd said, "That’s a lie. That’s a rumor. I wish I played a young Princess Leia. Disney, I’m available."

You can see Lourd's response in the video below (at around 1:29)

This is one of the longer standing rumors to debunked.  The rumor can be traced back to late June of 2014 when it was first reported that Lourd would be in the film and then a few days later the Young Princess Leia rumors started.  Now the question is, who is Billie Lourd playing in The Force Awakens?  We'll likely get our answer on December 18th, 2015.

Rumor: Diego Luna Cast in Lead Role in 'Rogue One'

By: Dominic Jones

Looks like Felicity Jones' co-star in Star Wars: Rogue One, the upcoming Anthology film from director Garreth Edwards has been found.  Variety is reporting that Diego Luna (Elysium) has been cast as the male lead to star along side Jones.  They also reiterate that Riz Ahmed and Ben Mendelsohn have been cast in the film.  Edwards confirmed at Celebration Anaheim that Jones was playing a Rebel Soldier and Variety believes that Luna and Ahmed are also playing Rebel Soldiers, while Mendelsohn will play the film's villain.  Variety is one of the most reputable sources when it comes to Hollywood casting rumors, so this information is likely correct (though we won't know for sure until an official announcement is made).

As expected Disney and Lucasfilm did not comment on the report.

I have to be honest, I'm not all that familiar with Luna's work.  Looking through his IMDb it seems he has worked in many roles in both English and Spanish.  I will say that so far I am quite happy with the diversity among the cast.  Though we only know of one female role thus far (granted that one, it's most likely the lead role, and two, we barely know anything about the rest of the cast beyond the four listed above), we are seeing a an ethnically diverse set of heroes, something the Rebel Alliance was lacking in the films.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
