By: Dominic Jones

Warning: May contain mild spoilers about The Force Awakens!

Our friends over at MakingStarWars.net have been in contact with their sources again and have posted a list of character names of "rebels" in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  There are five names on this list of character who will be fighting along side our heroes in the new film.  It doesn't seem like these will be major characters, however no more information about them is given.  For that reason, even if you are trying to avoid plot spoilers for The Force Awakens, you should be alright to keep reading (but, then again, if you don't want to know anything stop reading now!)

The character names are:
  1. Brance
  2. Major Ematt
  3. Captain Trilla
  4. Rebel Admiral
  5. Gorwyn the Pilot
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Report: 'The Force Awakens' Young Readers Tie-In Novel Titles Revealed

By: Dominic Jones

We all know the marketing tie-ins for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be huge.  Last year we learned that part of the kick off for the film's marketing would be four tie in young readers novels, released on September 4th.  At the time, the novels did not have names, merely characters they were associated with.  Now, however, the titles have been revealed on their listings on the Hatchet Business Portal.

The books are:
  • Smuggler’s Run: A Han Solo Adventure (formerly: Journey to Episode VII: Han Solo), Hardcover, Disney Lucasfilm Press, $12.99, 9781484724958 (age group 8 to 12)
  • The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure (formerly: Journey to Episode VII: Luke Skywalker), Hardcover, Disney Lucasfilm Press, $12.99 USD, 9781484724965, (age group 8 to 12)
  • Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure (previously titled Journey to Episode VII: Princess Leia), Hardcover, Disney Lucasfilm Press, $12.99, 9781484724972 (age group 8 to 12)
  • Lost Stars (formerly: Journey to Episode VII: The Fall of the Empire/The Rise of the Rebellion), likely to be written by Claudia Gray, Hardcover, Disney Lucasfilm Press, $17.99, 9781484724989 (age group 10 to 14)
Our friends over at MakingStarWars.net also broke down how they expect the marketing roll out for The Force Awakens will go.   These young reader books will be part of the "Introduction Stage," which will begin in September and will focus mostly on younger targeted material.  The second stage, the "Pre-release" stage, will get in to more "adult" releases, such as an "Art Of" book coming on November 2nd.  And finally the third stage, the "Post-Release" stage will include content that contains full spoilers for the movie and will begin once the film hits theaters.

'Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales' to Air in 2015 on Disney XD

The latest Lego Star Wars TV specials have been announced.  The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Disney XD had picked up a five episode mini-series titled LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales.  The series will be set after the events of Return of the Jedi and will feature C-3PO and R2-D2 looking back on lives together since The Phantom Menace.  The show will retell the story of the Star Wars saga from the perspective of the droids.

According to THR,
Set after the Rebel Alliance victory on Endor seen at the end of Return of the Jedi, the droids are regaling the assembled of their adventures that led them to their present situation.  An accidental kidnapping leads to a new adventure that progresses to the re-telling of the saga in the chronological order, starting from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi.

No word yet on who is writing and/or directing the series.  The release date is expect to be revealed in the coming months.
I will say I'm looking forward to this.  I've enjoyed the past Lego Star Wars TV specials, and I expect these new ones will be of similar tone.  I do question the logic of doing a comedy series so close to the release of The Force Awakens if Disney wants kids to understand the serious side of these characters not just the comedic style.  It does seem to contradict their reasons for cancelling Detours back in 2013 (though that may be returning, rendering that point moot).   Regardless, I look forward to seeing what Lucasfilm and Lego produce.

'Heir to the Jedi' Preview Excerpt

By: Dominic Jones

StarWars.com has released a preview excerpt from the upcoming novel Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne.  The novel is told from the first person perspective of Luke Skywalker, and hits shelves this Tuesday March 3rd.  The novel is Hearne's first in the galaxy far, far away and is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Check out the preview below,
“Wait, are you suggesting we attack the Interdictor by ourselves?” Nakari said.

“It’s either that or let them catch us. I don’t think they’ll respond to a polite request to stand down. And this is one of the old models. We should go before they have time to get reinforcements here. Right now it’s unescorted and only has twenty-four TIE fighters.”

“Only twenty-four? We’re one ship with a couple of blasters and a few missiles!”

“That’s all we need. And the TIE fighter pilots might be on lunch break or something, so we should be clear for a minute or two. We have speed and surprise on our side.” I probably sounded more confident than I actually felt, but that is the only way to engage the enemy—something I picked up from Han. He told me, “Never go into battle saying, ‘Well, I guess I’ll fight for my life now, if I really have to.’ Once committed, kid, you have to commit fully, or you won’t survive.” I pointed the nose down toward the Interdictor and accelerated for the first time to full attack speed, and it was breathtaking. The Desert Jewel was definitely faster than my X-wing.

“Luke, they’ve seen us by now! You can’t surprise them.”

“I’m talking about the surprise we picked up from the Chekkoo clan on Rodia. And the surprise that we would attack them at all, considering their advantages.”

The Interdictor’s batteries swung up and began spraying green bolts from quad laser cannons, but most of it was for show, since only a couple of them had the proper field of fire. The first squadron of TIE fighters, which must have been on alert or else eating lunch in their cockpits, began to swarm out from underneath.

“Let’s get out of here!” Nakari insisted. “This is insane!”

I didn’t think so; I wasn’t simply charging in with the hope that things would work out in my favor. I had a plan, and crazy people rarely had them. “I prefer to think of it as risky,” I said, and saying that reminded me of the conversation I had with Leia on the Patience. Surely this wasn’t as dangerous as going after the Death Star. “Artoo, which gravity projector should I target?”

ITS PORT SIDE, OUR STARBOARD.

“Both of them?”

YES.

“That complicates things.”

“They weren’t complicated before?” Nakari asked. “That cruiser has to be shielded.”

“It is, but this is one of the Immobilizer models, and we’ve been studying them since the Empire has been using them against us on our raids. They have twelve shield generators—some of them ray shields, some particle shields. We take out the particle shield generators for the port side first, then go after the gravity projectors with whatever we have left.”

“While dodging TIE fighters and quad laser fire. Do you hear yourself?”

Both were coming at me now, and I sent the Jewel into a spin away from an aggressive TIE pilot. Nakari missed seeing it, so focused was she on convincing me to flee. “I did say it was complicated.”
“Luke, let’s just run to the edge of the interdiction field! The Jewel is fast enough!” I’d thought of that already, and perhaps it would have worked if I’d been in the cockpit instead of trying to make the caf machine produce something drinkable, but we’d lost too much time and space in those ten to fifteen seconds while I was unable to do anything. “No, they sucked us in too close. The TIEs are already on us.”

Nakari turned her head, saw the vast assortment of death heading our way, jerked in her seat, and exclaimed, “Gah!” She didn’t press her point after that, seeing that it was too late. Situations develop fast when fighters close on one another so quickly. We wove through the first six TIEs, avoiding their fire and head-on collisions; I managed to wing one of them with our laser cannons—we had three now, not just one—and it careened into another, taking both out. I didn’t bother firing at the cruiser, since there was no way our lone ship could weaken the shields enough to punch through, but I would gladly pull the trigger on the TIE fighters whenever opportunity afforded.

The Empire had stopped making these particular Interdictor cruisers because of their vulnerabilities, but while they weren’t making any new ones, there were still plenty of them out there. The Alliance kept running into them, so we had been training recently on how to eliminate them before our raiding parties got wiped out by their escorts of destroyers and cruisers. The Empire was putting gravity projectors into Star Destroyers now, much more difficult to take out for a group and impossible for a single ship to damage. To my knowledge no one had ever taken out an Immobilizer with a single ship before, but I’d theorized about the possibility with Wedge…

Report: Maisie Richardson-Sellers''The Force Awakens' Character Name Revealed

By: Dominic Jones

Although never officially announced by Lucasfilm, it has been known that Maisie Richardson-Sellers had been cast in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  Now it seems her character's name has been revealed.  Richardson-Sellers'Spotlight CV has been updated to include a new listing for Star Wars, which states her role is Korr Sella.

While nothing is official until confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney, this is about as close as we can get to it.  Richardson-Sellers was first reported to be in the film by The Hollywood Reporter back in April of 2014 (right before the official cast announcement) and it was suggested that she may actual have a leading role in the film.  The size of her role is still up in the air and the fact that she was never officially announced as part of the cast, though she did confirm that she was in the film back in December, suggests it may not be a huge role.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015.

Rumor: Details About Korr Sella in 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

Word got out earlier today that actor Maisie Richardson-Sellers would be playing a character named Korr Sella in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  Little was known about Richardson-Sellers role in the film, until now.  Our friends over at MakingStarWars.net have posted some details about her character, which was known as "the emissary" during production (much in the same way that Rey was listed as "Kira" behind the scenes).  The role seems to be small but important (which might explain why The Hollywood Reporter suggested she may be a lead back when she was first reportedly cast).  As usual, there is a chance that this may not be true but if you are avoiding all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now!  This is your official SPOILER ALERT!

---
----
-----
------
-------
--------
---------
----------
According to Jason Ward from Making Star Wars, here's was Korr Sella, aka "The Emissary" will be doing in The Force Awakens,
  • It appears The Emissary is on a secret mission of her own.
  • The role is small but could be pivotal.
  • She has 3-4 scenes at most.
  • It appears she is working for Leia.
  • She is at Rose’s Pub when the Empire’s new weapon levels the pub and the castle next to it.
  • She doesn’t survive the attack.
  • Her death brings Leia and See-Threepio to the planet where they have an awkward meeting with Han Solo.
It seems awfully coincidental she ends up at Rose’s pub and that’s a mystery to me right now. There’s no evidence she is called there by Rose or anything like that. I’ve put out the feelers on this information so hopefully we know those answer soon. It appears most of the context for part of Poe’s path and maybe even Korr Sella requires the script’s expository dialog (they have no scenes together). To me all of this points towards this plan by the Rebels that is falling apart and Rey and Finn are there to pick up the pieces in a way no one could have expected. Functionally speaking, this character brings Leia and Han together in this film, unfortunately she dies. Of course that is all predicated upon Korr Sella being The Emissary which Richardson-Sellers was originally listed as playing.

What's interesting about this is that it suggests that Han and Leia may not be on good terms, as if they had some sort of falling out after Return of the Jedi.  This would be an interesting twist on what we expect.  Perhaps the events of The Force Awakens will bring them together, or perhaps they will never have their chance at a happy reunion.   Either way, it sounds like Korr Sella/The Emissary will have an important, albeit small, role to play in the new film.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Rumor: Billy Dee Williams to Have Cameo as Lando in Episode VIII

By: Dominic Jones

Ever since he was not part of the castingannouncement fans have been wondering if and when we'll be seeing Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in the sequel trilogy.  It seems to be all but certain that he won't be in The Force Awakens, but that doesn't mean he can't be in Episode VIII.  A new report from The Sun newspaper in The UK says that he will be making, "a fun cameo" in the Rian Johnson directed Episode VIII.  They also report that Billy Dee is "definitely up for it."

We should point out that The Sun's reputation is dubious at best and everything they report should be taken with a huge grain of salt.  That being said, I also wouldn't be surprised if Billy Dee does show up in a later film in the sequel trilogy.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

SPOILERS: Fulcrum's Identity Revealed

$

By: Lillian Skye

This article contains major spoilers from the season finale of Star Wars Rebels.

Fans have been speculating for weeks over the identity of Fulcrum, a mysterious hooded figure that has been aiding the crew of the Ghost throughout the first season of Star Wars Rebels. Fulcrum provided intel to Hera, the pilot of the Ghost, and gave the rebels information that let them target pockets of Imperial forces across the galaxy.

From analyzing symbols that appeared in the TV show to changing the pitch of the character's voice, fans did not want to wait this long to find out the identify of Hera's contact. Just when they thought they'd figured it out, someone would make another claim as to who the character was. Despite the fact that a French actresses' resume was updated with the identity of Fulcrum, people still doubted it's validity and argued over the true person behind this character.

In the last few minutes of the episode, Hera's informant was revealed to be fan favorite Ahsoka Tano, who was last seen when she left the Jedi Order in Season 5 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. That episode aired exactly two years ago to the date of Fire Across the Galaxy on March 2nd, 2013.

At the end of Clone Wars, Tano was about 17 years old. Now, she's in her early 30s and ready to take down the Empire.

In Rebels Recon, Dave Filoni explained how Ahsoka's new look is "psudo-samuri" and how he wanted her to look like could be wearing armor found in an ancient Jedi temple. Her new lightsabers are "basically white" to reflect her non affiliation.

USA Today spoke with Filoni and Ashley Eckstein, who has returned to voice the character. "I look up to Ahsoka," Ashley said.  "She has such a great moral compass and I look forward to seeing where life takes her because I don't think it's ever going to be a boring story."

Filoni explained  that Ahsoka will have a big role in the upcoming season,  but won't be the center of attention. "It's not like she's going to have a bunk on the Ghost anytime soon," Filoni said. "She needs to remain kind of a mysterious figure who is woven in and out of the story."

The appearance of Ahsoka Tano brings everything full circle. Fans who grew up with the Clone Wars are pleased to find out what happened to "Snips," and young fans who experienced Star Wars for the first time through Star Wars Rebels will have the opportunity to go back and experience all six seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and discover a world before the Empire.

With Tano on board, the spark of the Rebellion is now a burning flame. Vader and Imperials every where, beware.

If you want to re-watch the breathtaking moment when Ahsoka was revealed, or watch it for the first time, USA Today has released the scene on their website, which you can watch below:

If you're not watching Star Wars Rebels already, you need to change that right now! The series premiered last year and has been getting better and better ever since, featuring many awesome guest stars such as Lando Calrissian and Yoda, all leading up to a mind blowing cameo in last night's season finale. But the shocking developments don't stop there, we have just received word that yet another big name guest star is coming to the show! Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is perhaps best know for playing the title role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, has joined the cast of Star Wars Rebels. Gellar confirmed it earlier today on Instagram when she posted a photo of herself in the studio with Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni with the caption. "Anyone want to guess..." You can check it out below!

A photo posted by Sarah Michelle (@sarahmgellar) on

The most interesting aspect of this news is the fact that Gellar is actually the real life wife of Freddie Prinze Jr., who voices leading Jedi Kanan Jarrus on the series. It is unknown whether her role will be just a cameo, or her character will have a sizable part in the series. Nevertheless, it will be awesome to have "Buffy" herself finally join the Star Wars universe!

Rumor: Star Wars Battlefront Prototype Gameplay To Be Revealed At The Game Developer's Conference (GDC)

By Ciaran Duggan

Earlier today, craveonline.ca reported that the highly anticipated Star Wars game Star Wars: Battlefront will be exhibited to attendees of the Game Developer's Conference this week (March 2nd-March 6th).

The website claims that the footage unveiled to the audience was greeted with thunderous applause and an abundance of plaudits from spectators. If, the website has announced authentic intel on the subject matter, then it will not be too long until public audiences are given the opportunity to view this content themselves. The launch date of the game is expected to occur close to the release date of The Force Awakens (i.e. the Fall).

Secrecy still enshrouds the content of the game, as well as the release date. Notwithstanding this, it surely cannot be too long until there is substantial information unveiled to the public concerning these matters. The release of footage accessible to the public at GDC would be a perfect opportunity to bear witness to this material.

Dave Filoni Sends Thank You For Fan's Response To The 'Rebels' Finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Star Wars Rebels season one finale!

The first season of Star Wars Rebels went out with a bang earlier this week and successfully blew all our minds! The finale episode "Fire Across The Galaxy" saw the Ghost crew finally succeed in rescuing Kanan from Imperial captivity, ultimately leading to the demise of their nemesis of one villain and the return of another. But before the episode could finish, we were re-introduced to a beloved character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Ahsoka Tano. Star Wars fandom understandably let out a collective scream of joy at the sight of Ahsoka climbing down the ladder inside the Ghost. It seems that the fans' reaction even caught the creators of the series off guard.

Today, Executive producer Dave Filoni, who created Ahsoka alongside George Lucas for The Clone Wars, posted a message to social media about him and his crew's appreciation for the overwhelming response to the finale, and included a sketch of Ahsoka in her Rebels form. I think I can speak for all fans when I say; No, thank YOU, Dave & crew! All of us were brought to tears when Ahsoka walked down the steps of the Jedi Temple at the end of Season five of The Clone Wars, and when the series subsequently ended, we worried we would never see the young Torgruta again. Thank you for putting our fears to rest and making Ahsoka, what we can assume to be, a major part of Star Wars Rebels going forward. May the Force be with the cast & crew of this wonderful series! We hope to see it continue for many seasons to come!

In honor of the release of Star Wars: Princess Leia #1 by Marvel Comics today, our friends over at MakingStarWars.net have posted a bevy of new information relating to the role Princess Leia will play in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  Up until now, little had been known about Leia's role in the new film, especially when compared to what we know (or think we know) about Luke and Han.  As usual there is a chance this may turn out not to be true but it you are trying to avoid all The Force Awakens spoilers then stop reading now.  This is your official SPOILER ALERT!

According to Jason Ward from Making Star Wars here is what Leia will be up to in The Force Awakens,
  • Leia sends an emissary to Rose’s planet who is killed by the “Catapult” weapon of the Empire.
  • The sequence in which Han Solo and Princess meet for the first time in the film is described as “awkward.”
  • She is described as a Queen on the main cast list.
  • At one point she tells Rebel pilot Poe Dameron his squadron is all that survived. He reluctantly obeys her orders.
  • She appears to still be a prominent leader of the Rebel Alliance.
  • Leia wants to know what Finn knows (presumably about the Empire).
  • Towards the middle of the film, in the Map Room of the Rebel Base, Leia has a secret “up her sleeve,” involving her own weapon called “The Sledgehammer” by the production.
  • Without storyboards, “The Sledgehammer” is difficult to understand but appears to be a kamikaze-like craft capable of taking down Star Destroyer sized spacecrafts.
  • Leia is proud of this weapon.
  • Rose tells Leia she thinks the sword found inside BB-8 should be with Finn so Leia hands the lightsaber over to him.
  • Leia and Han still argue.
  • The last thing Han says to Leia before he leaves for the final mission is “I’ll hurry back.”
  • When Kylo and Han meet again, it cuts to Leia who feels “a disturbance in the Force” so to speak.
  • There is no indication she is a Jedi or started upon that path with her brother.
  • Leia is elated when it appears Luke has been found.
  • At the end of the film, Leia and Rey have a special goodbye in which she bids Rey “a fond farewell.”
The suggestion that Han and Leia's first meeting is awkward seems to be more evidence that Han and Leia are not together in the film.  But then there's Han's "Ill hurry back" which suggests that at the very least they still care deeply about one another.   Also, the idea that Leia is very proud of a weapon is also a surprising one as I can't see Leia really acting that way, having been one of the few people to witness the full might of the Death Star.  But then lots can change over 30 years.  Her actions/behavior around this weapon may have been what led to her and Han splitting up.

As for her final scene with Rey, this to me serves as more evidence that they are mother and daughter.  This could also provide an explanation for why the sequence when she and Han's first meeting in the film is awkward, without having the two of them split up.  If Rey is truly their daughter and truly off living on her own, is there a chance that she has become estranged from her parents?  This would make a reunion for the three of them quite awkward if they haven't spoken in a few years.

Also, I love the idea of Leia sensing Han's death through the Force (even if she isn't a Jedi in the film) the same way Obi-Wan sensed the destruction of Alderaan in Episode IV or the way Yoda sensed Order 66 in Episode III.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

By: Benjamin Hart

Season one of Star Wars Rebels ended earlier this week with it's thrilling and shocking final episode "Fire Across The Galaxy". Along with it came a special edition of Rebels Recon, the behind the scenes companion videos hosted by Lucasfilm's Andi Gutierrez. It featured interviews with the cast & crew discussing the mind blowing finale, and at the very end revealed a collection of concept art from season two of the series. Much of the artwork is hard to catch while watching the video, appearing in short flashes, so we slowed the video down and grabbed screenshots of all the concepts, which you can check out above and below! Included are our first looks at a new Rebel commander and some new Rebel ships including a squad of A-Wings and their pilots.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from the Star Wars Rebels season one finale & beyond!

You can view the rest of the art in the album below on our Facebook page!

Also be sure to watch the full Rebels Recon here!

Season two will premiere at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim this April, and will hit Television screens sometime later this year! Stay tuned to The Star Wars Underworld for more news on the upcoming season!

Rumour: Sam Witwer To Voice A Legacy Character in Star Wars: Rebels Season Two

By Ciaran Duggan,

The inaugural season of Star Wars: Rebels may have wrapped up, but already cast announcements for the future season are being released thick and fast.

Making Star Wars News has reported that voice actor, Sam Witwer (voice of Darth Maul and the Son in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) will be playing one of the chief Star Wars Legacy characters in the Season Two Premiere. Their sources have disclosed he will be playing Emperor Palpatine in Season Two of Rebels.

Of course, this news must be taken with a pinch of salt, but if Sam Witwer was to return and play Palpatine, this would certainly be an apt choice. Sam Witwer has had a talent for voicing malign characters in the Star Wars Universe (including Palpatine in the Force Unleashed Games), so this decision will certainly go down well with the fans. Tim Curry and the recently deceased Ian Abercrombie all voiced his character superbly and I believe that Sam Witwer will follow in his footsteps fantastically.

Season Two of Star Wars: Rebels cannot come soon enough!

Dave Filoni Talks Rebels Season One Finale

Warning: Contains Spoilers from the Star Wars Rebels Season One finale!

Star Wars fans are still freaking out over the amazing finale to Season One of Star Wars Rebels that aired on Monday night and featured the return of fan favorites Ahsoka Tano and Darth Vader.  Recently, Rebels executive producer and show runner Dave Filoni sat down with IGN to talk about the finale.  Below are some highlights from that interview.

IGN: I saw everyone on Twitter freaking out Monday night as the episode aired. Do you watch the live reaction?
Filoni: I don’t. I don’t really do that. It’ll come to me anyway. [Laughs] My email starts to pile up with links. I don’t have to watch anything live. It’s going to hit me whether I want it to or not. But it was pretty fascinating. Someone even sent me some reaction videos where people film themselves watching it, which is really fascinating. It’s mind-blowing man, I gotta say. I thought it was a big deal bringing Ahsoka back, but I helped create her, so for me and my crew it was a big deal because that’s our character. But watching the reaction online… You take this character that when she first appeared, there were a lot of naysayers. We all remember hearing people say, “This is the worst character since Jar Jar Binks.” Add just seeing stuff like that that fans say, we were like, "We’ll see. "We’ll work on it and evolve her." Now to have this resounding cheer go out from fans… At least the positive fans are far louder than the negative. I don’t think any of us were prepared for that. It’s cool though. I love it.

IGN: From the outside, I was convinced that Ahsoka was showing up on this show from the second it was announced. Was I right? Did you know that from the second you were working on the show or did you think maybe, but with a question of how? What were your first thoughts on it?
Filoni: I think it’s always a question of how. I mean, of course it’s something I would have wanted but I was very aware of one fact, which is, it wasn’t just that we had been bought by Disney. That was one aspect of a huge amount of change that was occurring at the time we were trying to create this show. George [Lucas] was also stepping down creatively and administratively from Lucasfilm prior to that when he brought Kathleen Kennedy on board. So I had Kiri Hart and Rayne Roberts and Carrie Beck and I was working with them and I’d never known them or worked with them before. I wanted to create an atmosphere of collaboration. I didn’t just want to say, “Well, I want to use my characters!" or characters from Clone Wars. And we all wanted to be very careful, rightfully so, about using Clone Wars characters because we were afraid people would confuse the show for Clone Wars and it’s not Clone Wars. There was some debate on when would we bring Ahsoka in or would she even come in. Would any Clone Wars characters? I think what was great was from the very beginning, Kiri and everyone were very big fans of Ahsoka. They had watched Clone Wars and they were fully on her side of the court. It was something they wanted. Plus it was a character that, by the end, George was particularly proud of and so were we. So having been, I don’t want to say cut short, but having her story end, we could see a need to continue it but we wanted to make sure we did it in the right way. But so far, so good.

IGN: This is quite a few years later in her life. Now that she’s in the mix, how much room will there be to learn about the years in between? Or does the fact that with Star Wars there’s plenty of other outlets to tell that story mean maybe we’ll just get a little of that information?
Filoni: Well, I think it’s a little bit of both, right? We do have many outlets but one thing I’ve been very thankful for, as far as Ahsoka is concerned, is that Kiri Hart has been very particular about that character and always comes to me whenever it comes up, if there’s interest in Ahsoka. Of course, you can imagine that after she left the Jedi Order and after Clone Wars was taken off the air, there was actually a tremendous amount of interest about Ahsoka in other forms of media, creatively, wanting to explore her character. I didn’t feel like that was the right thing to do it and something that’s great is getting the creative support from your peers around you to say yeah, you’re probably right and let’s hold off on that. I always feel strongly that while we can have everything at our fingertips right now, something that made Star Wars so powerful to me growing up was we would go through a long period of time where we wondered what happened to Han Solo. He was stuck in carbonite. Now, everything’s instant. But I think we built a deep love and connection to our characters because, for lack of a better term, we dreamed about what they were going through. We wondered and we anticipated, so when the payoffs came, I think it was a lot better, a lot stronger, so I thought making people wait to find out what happened to Ahsoka just built up her mystique a little bit more, a little bit better until we nailed her down. But there are things happening in Season 2 where I’ve thrown a line here and a line there that I know will land with the fans, and they’ll be like, “What is she talking about? What is that referencing?” I think it will drive them insane with curiosity, in the best way possible. People will start to piece it all together and then hopefully, I can one day tell these kind of stories that I want to. I myself am curious at what medium it will be in at the end of the day. I don’t know.

[NOTE]: USA Today reported that there were 12 more episodes featuring Ahsoka left to be told from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

IGN: How did you decide you wanted to (kill The Inquistor) pretty early in the show’s run? I think that’s what really surprised me the most was this is only the end of Season 1.
Filoni: I think it just speaks to… We always want there to be consequences and that goes for the villains. We saw that a little bit with Aresko and Grint when Tarkin showed up and their brand of kind of carelessness is dispatched. We discussed the Inquisitor. It was painful because Jason [Isaacs] is so brilliant playing him, but it was a pivotal moment in the season and everything’s going to change. Season 1 is like A New Hope. Season 2 becomes more like Empire Strikes Back for our heroes. They’re starting to pass through this new part of their journey and things become ratcheted up, more exciting, more adventure; but darker, more dangerous like you would expect. Having the Inquisitor hang on, after such a failure, having captured this Jedi and let him go - It’s really a problem for the Inquisitor because he knows that Vader and the Emperor will not suffer this failure. He knows what they could do to him is, to him, worse than death. That’s a critical difference between an inquisitor and a full fledged Sith. A Sith sees death as an absolute. They’ll do anything they can to avoid it because there’s nothing for them after death and they know this. That’s why the Emperor is so obsessed with trying to prolong his life, to find immortality - because if he dies, he loses all his power. He can’t see a way to be part of the eternal existence of things and just selflessly be a part of it like Obi-Wan can and like Yoda can. They’re opposites.

An Inquisitor though, he says, there are some things far more frightening than death, which is an interesting thing for him that I’ll let people puzzle over what it means. It’s not accidental, the way he perishes. And he does perish. This isn’t me being sneaky or clever, having him fall off screen. I know that once Maul got cut in half, pretty much everyone was like, “He could be alive!” But I don’t see that happening. We felt it would have a big impact, obviously not just for the villains, but for Kanan to have this happen in front of his eyes. There’s a moment where he thinks he’s lost his main adversary in the Inquisitor and he’s lost Ezra, he believes, so there he’s kind of alone in all this chaos – the very symbol of a Jedi at that point for how things have gone for them. It was a dramatic moment and we have, I think, in some ways some better things in store for Season 2 that could play off of that moment.

IGN: You mentioned that Ahsoka isn’t going to be bunking there every episode. In general, what about the larger Rebel Alliance, now that you’ve brought that into the show? How much can they lean on them for support?
Filoni: I think we’re going to wait for a lot of these for Season 2 to answer, but what’s really been revealed to fans and what we’ve been demonstrating, is everything is a lot more of a gradual build than we wanted to believe. So Season 1 really dealt with the Rebels pretty much on their own, as an individual group, really bonding. Obviously we brought Blockade Runners in at the end and they played their hand a little bit to save our heroes. One thing I liked about the final episode was when we were all talking about it, Simon [Kinberg] and I were like, “This should be a plan that was really good but that, at the end of the day, if Chopper hadn’t gotten those other Rebels to come get them, they would have lost.” It was just too much for them sneak onto Tarkin’s Star Destroyer and escape and fly away. They were going to get shot down. They really had no way out of it, so things had to dynamically change in order to rescue them. It’s a chance that they’ve taken as a larger cell now and we’ll develop that relationship, we’ll just say, in the next season because again, it changes the dynamic of the group and we’ll have to see what that means.
